According to Eurogamer, there’s a strong rumor going around that Mass Effect 3 will feature the franchises first multiplayer mode in the form of a four player co-op horde-like mode, which players facing wave after wave of enemies.
Eurogamer says the multiplayer mode will be completely stand alone, will feature competitive elements, and most importantly will not compromise the single player campaign.“We haven’t talked at all about multiplayer in the Mass Effect franchise, but we’re exploring multiplayer in all of our games and all of our franchises,” BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka told Eurogamer last week at E3.
Chalk it up as a rumor for now, but given that BioWare had stated previously that they were looking at reaching out to a wider audience with Mass Effect 3, a multiplayer component should surprise no one. Does Mass Effect 3 need multiplayer? Will multiplayer hurt the single player of Mass Effect 3? I’m inclined to answer no to both of those questions, considering I didn’t think the Uncharted series needed multiplayer either, and yet it turned out great and Uncharted 2’s single player exceeded that of the first Uncharted. Likewise, I think it’ll succeed in Mass Effect and if done right will only help make it a better game with more replay value and bang for your bucks.
Mass Effect 3 was delayed until early 2012 to help ensure that it is the “biggest, boldest, and best game in the series.” It will launch simotanusly for PC, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3 on March 6, 2012.
