E3 2012: Metal Gear Rising Revengeance Official Trailer

It’s important to note that this game is coming out for both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. As of this writing there is no concrete release date. One would think if they’re showing this at E3 that it stands excellent odds of being released in time for the holidays for all the obvious reasons although some estimates have this sliding into Q1 2013.

Official description:

Players assume control of Raiden, protagonist of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and supporting character in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. A key gameplay feature for the game is titled zan-datsu, which involves “cutting” through enemies and “taking” parts from the bodies of dismembered cyborgs and robots. Rising’s stealth elements will emphasize Raiden’s considerable speed and agility through what Matsuyama describes as “hunting stealth.” Unlike the “waiting stealth” of previous titles, in which players remained hidden and avoided combat, players in Rising will instead quickly stalk their enemies and use acrobatic maneuvers to stay out of sight while closing in. This ties in with the game’s zan-datsu feature, allowing them to prey upon enemies to obtain weapons, items, and energy.

That stealth mechanic reads like a breath of fresh air for the gameplay on paper at least. This is a series known for its high quality across the boards since its origins on the original NES which, yes, I played, thereby dating myself. This is a game that will be on a lot of people’s radars and rightfully so. Stay tuned.

  1. This looks more fun to me than Metal Gear Solid 4. I know that game gets a ton of praise, but I just don’t see it. I didn’t get very far into it, at all, but from what I’ve played of it, it sucked big time.

    • MGS4 was a good game for me but I think it’s been overhyped. Some of the gameplay mechanics in four were downright frustrating. Furthermore, ever since part 2 there’s some downright soap opera-ish and maudlin aspects to the narrative that I could personally do without. Raiden is a character that’s a mixed bag with fans. Wow, was he ragged on big time back in part 2. I’m hoping this game means a new leaf the series. Tighten up the gameplay, lose the soap opera, and stick to the solid technothriller and you can milk it to the moon.

      • I’ll have to try MGS4 again since I didn’t get very far into it. I don’t think I had the patience for it, especially since I got it at the same time I got a bunch of PS3 games. This one looks pretty fun though.
