UPDATE (4/29/13): Ubisoft has officially announced the release date for Watch_Dogs, it’s November 19, 2013. More details and a world premiere gameplay trailer here.

Pushed for a date by a user, the Watch Dogs Twitter said: “The game will be released in 2013 and will be on released on PC and consoles.”

The tweet, as you’ll see, isn’t specific on console platforms, fueling even more speculation the game will be a next-gen game.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has already confirmed, though, it’ll launch on PS3 and 360. On a next-gen release, he took a “we’ll see” stance.   http://www.vg247.com/2012/06/05/ubisoft-watch-dogs-coming-to-ps3-360/

Watch Dogs was announced as arguably the biggest surprise of a show and is all but likely to come out in best of E3 lists from now until forever.

As spotted by VG24/7, the official Watch Dogs Twitter account confirmed earlier in the week that Ubisoft’s open world phone-hacking and face-shooting action game will be released on PC next year.

We already knew that Ubisoft’s impressive demo of the game was running on a high-end PC, but it’s good to get confirmation that it’s coming our way – and hopefully day and date with the consoles. It’s possible that the PC is listed first because the ‘consoles’ being referred to are Microsoft and Sony’s next generation offerings. Nonetheless, it’s nice to get a proper confirmation at this early stage.

It was revealed earlier in the week that the second character seen in the reveal demo was in fact another player. “Online is in the DNA of Watch Dogs” said executive producer Dominic Guay.

I wish it was more specific than this. Heck, it could be December 2013 at this rate but we’ll see. Hopefully they’ll give us something more specific down the road before too long.

It’s disappointing in one sense: We all want to play this thing like yesterday but on the other hand: I don’t want them to rush this gem out especially if it’s flirting with outright being innovative in some ways as the current existing media hints at. Cook it full in the oven, do it right, do it well.

The wait is going to be sheer agony. Thankfully there are plenty of other great games coming out for the rest of 2012 to “ease the pain.”

  1. I’m willing to bet this thing doesn’t see the light of day on PS3 and 360. When does Ubisoft ever default to showing anything on the PC ever? Hell, they can’t even get the Assassin’s Creed games to come out for PC until months later.

They didn’t just show it on a high-end PC because it looks great, they did it because the only other versions of it are being developed for the PS4 and the next Xbox.

I’m betting the next Xbox and PS4 both hit within two months of each other next year; this will be a quasi launch title for both releasing in November 2013.

We’ll see though. Between this, Last of Us, Beyond, God of War, likely new consoles from Microsoft and Sony, GTA V, BioShock Infinite, Tomb Raider, others that I’m forgetting, and possibly Uncharted 4… 2013 is shaping up to be even more stacked than this year.

      Thou art mistaken. ;)

It’s going to show on consoles because that’s where the larger user base is. They’d be fools to try and wait until either the new MS or Sony machine would show up. What they would/could do would be if the game kicks ass, sells like hotcakes, etc… is have a “next gen console” verison come out when that time was appropriate.

Neither MS nor Sony even hinted at E3 of new hardware. If they follow typical form that guarantees 2013 as a complete write off for new console hardware from either of them. I still say late 2014 at the earliest for either MS or Sony. MS should go first simply because they brought the 360 out over a year before the PS3 came out. I’d argue they’re overdue. They should have teased the next Xbox at E3 a year ago.

      • I’m saying 2013. They’ll announce at either Tokyo Game Show or the Game Developer’s Conference in early 2013, and show it and the games off at E3 for its Fall 2013 release. No way another year passes without new consoles; games have already been long rumored to be in development for them (Beyond Good and Evil 2 being one of them).

What Ubisoft is saying and what actually happens I bet is two different things. Max Payne 3 was suppose to release in 2009. Agent was announced in 2009 and we haven’t seen or heard anything about it since other than “it’s still actively in development.”

If I were a betting man, I’d bet money that Watch Dogs is a Ubisoft launch title for both PS4 and the next Xbox. Not because PS3 and 360 “couldn’t handle the game” like some folks claim, but because it’s what makes sense. Star Wars 1313 is another game that won’t see a release on PS3 or X360.

I think if the PS4 weren’t coming out next year, then the Last of Us would be coming out this year. I say that because Uncharted has been every two years. They’ve been developing Last of Us for two years already. That it won’t come out until early 2013 has me believing that Uncharted 4 is currently in development for PS4.

    • Not inconceivable but like I said in the Last of Us thread: If they do this the way you’re suggesting then BOTH MS and Sony are breaking some fairly old and set behavior patterns which would have been to launch the hype train at this E3, go through all those shows you named with more hype train and material, and set it all up for the following year, typically in that year. I won’t rule it out but I’m still leaning strongly against a new MS or Sony console as soon as next year. MS should go first anyways. They were ahead of the PS3 by over a year.

      • Microsoft announced Xbox 360 in May 2005, it released in November 2005. There’s two more big events before next year’s E3, and I think it’s very likely we’ll see a teaser for one or both later this year or definitely at GDC in March 2013.
