Spring technically begins March 20th, but I’m in Alabama and it doesn’t exactly feel like winter down here most days. There’s a lot of should be good games coming out this spring (it ends June 20th), some that aren’t spring but are close enough (especially in the South where it might as well be spring).
Just take a look at this list of games releasing from the beginning of March to the end of June:
Tomb Raider – March 5th
Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk – March 5th
MLB 2K13 – March 5th
MLB 13: The Show – March 5th
Sim City – March 5th
Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 – March 12th
God of War: Ascension – March 12th
Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory – March 12th
LEGO City Undercover – March 18th
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate – March 19th
Gears of War: Judgment – March 19th
BioShock Infinite – March 26th
Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel – March 26th
Defiance – April 2nd
Injustice: Gods Among Us – April 16th
Star Trek: The Video Game – April 23rd
Dead Island: Riptide – April 23rd
The Last of Us – June 14th
That’s a big list, and it’s not by any means all the games coming out across only PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. Those are just the games that I personally would like to have; there are lots of others that I care nothing for.
There are some heavy hitters on that list: Tomb Raider, Sim City, God of War, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Gears of War, BioShock, and The Last of Us.
The Last of Us looks absolutely amazing and Naughty Dog IS my favorite developer and I have huge expectations for that game. I fully expect The Last of Us to be sitting atop my Game of the Year list at the end of the year. I am heavily anticipating that game, and yet there’s one that I find myself more looking forward to that comes out two months before The Last of Us.
What is Defiance? Defiance is a game coming out April 2nd. It’s also a SyFy show premiering April 15th. It’s the game whose tagline is “Watch the show. Play the game. Change the world.”
More specifically, Defiance is third person shooter MMO coming to PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. It’s set in a vast open world with PvE and PvP and a thousand players and hundreds of levels (no level 50 cap here). It’s actually the MMO that I have always wanted.
I’m not a PC game; mostly because my laptop won’t play most games and I’m not made of money to drop a couple of grand on a beastly gaming rig. I stick with consoles because the graphics are good enough for me, most games on the PC that I would care to play are also on a console, and in the case of my PS3 there are many amazing exclusives. But one thing I haven’t been able to do on a console is play an MMO, or more specifically one that I can really get into.
Yes, PS3 has DC Universe Online, Free Realms, soon to have Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, and it has massive multiplayer games like MAG and Dust 514 (which isn’t so massive at the moment, but is connected to the PC MMO EVE). Free Realms was stupid, and DCUO is fun but not something I’ve been able to keep playing; I’m just not a comic fan and don’t care for the DC universe (I do like Marvel, and it’s too bad the Marvel MMO isn’t coming to PS3 because I’d play that one).
I’ve played some MMO’s on the PC; free to play ones because I’m not paying for a subscription to play anything. Some of them I have liked for a little while, like Nexon’s Vindictus (quite fun). No matter how fun they have been, I’ve never been able to invest in them simply because the gameplay isn’t the kind I really like.
Defiance though is finally going to give me the MMO, and in a lot of ways the game, that I have always wanted to play. It’s a check list of almost all of my favorite things: open world, massive, third person shooter, real time skill based (i.e. no roll of the dice to see if your shot connected or not), etc.
There was a time when I preferred first-person games, but now I don’t really care for them. I do like MAG, and I do play Dust 514. I also like Resistance, Killzone, and Borderlands. That’s the extent of my first-person gaming though; I don’t care for the Battlefields and the Call of Duty games.
These days I much prefer to run around an open world like Red Dead Redemption, Assassin’s Creed, InFamous, Just Cause 2, The Saboteur, or a tight third-person shooter like Uncharted, Max Payne 3, and Mass Effect.
Defiance has been described by some people as being a third-person Borderlands on a massive scale. I haven’t played it (since the console beta has happened yet, soon though), but I can certainly see the similarities. That’s definitely not a bad thing either as Borderlands 2 is great. And considering Defiance is third-person, I’ll probably like it better (and I love Borderlands 2).
You’re in a world, a terraformed Earth and what was San Francisco, and there’s a thousand other people potentially running around in this world. You can help them, or you can do your own thing. Outside of this massive open world, you can do special co-op missions with three other people, or play traditional competitive modes like team Deathmatch.
Random events happen in the world and things that happen on the TV show can impact what happens in the game (which is a persistent, always going world), and vise-versa. The potential here is amazing, and especially if the game can have maintain a thriving community (and that shouldn’t be a problem; gameplay looks great and there is no subscription).
I have my copy pre-ordered for the PS3 (and yes, I hope you reading this also get the PS3 version if you have a PS3… add me on PSN, I’m PatriotPaine), and this is the first game that I’ve pre-ordered since Assassin’s Creed 3 in October. It will be the first game that I buy since I bought Hitman Absolution back in November. Yep, this game, Defiance, is the game that I’m choosing to buy day one over other games that I’ve really been looking forward to like Tomb Raider, God of War, LEGO City, and Atelier Ayesha.
April 2nd really can’t get here fast enough and I can’t foresee my playing any other game between April 2nd and June 14th, and this has all the potential to finally be the MMO that I will still be playing come April 2, 2014.
I really hope the console beta begins soon (as in this month) as I cannot wait to finally get to play this game and see first hand if it is as good as I think it will be (and as it appears to be in the videos that I’ve watched). I haven’t pumped hundreds upon hundreds into a game since Red Dead Redemption, but I feel like this could be the one that maybe surpasses my total RDR playtime (I certainly hope so).
Have you played the previous PC betas and alpha? If so, without breaking the NDA, what do you think about the longevity of the game?
Anyone else picking this up? If so, drop us a comment and let us know what it is about this game that you’re most looking forward to and what system you’re picking up for.
Hit the jump to see some videos of the game in action, including an IGN video of Defiance being played on an Xbox 360 for over an hour; it’s a great look at both the open world game play and the 4-player co-op missions. And then circle your calanders, Defiance is bringing MMO/shooter goodness to PC and consoles on April 2nd.
