CM Punk to return at Chicago Raw?

“CM Punk is expected to return at tomorrow night’s Raw in Chicago, Illinois, according to Dave Meltzer on today’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio (listen here).

While Meltzer won’t say he’s 100% sure Punk will be at the show, his source, who he says is “one of the biggest stars in the industry,” said that it’s 100% certain.”

McPherson’s Mindset: I don’t know how much stock to put in this report. Meltzer distances himself from this by saying “his source” is 100% sure that Punk will be returning. Also don’t know how much stock to put on what WWE wrestlers say as far as who will be showing up where. There was a recent news report that hit all the wrestling news sites in which Big Show (literally, one of the ‘biggest’ stars in the industry) claimed he was sure Brock Lesnar was going to be at Elimination Chamber, even though it was already pretty much in the works that he wasn’t going to be there. I hope this report is true, even if it is just Punk coming back to do an obligatory “lost my smile” type speech to fill that missing piece of the puzzle in fan’s eyes.

Even if he were returning full time at this point to honor the rest of his contract, I’m not sure what WWE does with him. Bryan has already been inserted into the HHH storyline. Perhaps he could be the third man in the Wrestlemania title match? With Batista turning heel one would think that means WWE is going to be making some kind of major change to this match (which was going to be a disaster no doubt), which if that’s the case, would need to happen fairly soon. Storyline is kind of in place as Punk could say he was illegally eliminated from the Rumble by Kane, who had already been eliminated.

  1. If he shows up then it for me at least it means this entire thing was a work.

I’m with Q, if Punk is there tomorrow then we got worked; which is a good thing on all accounts.

  3. I don’t know about that; if so it’s a pretty lousy work. All it means is that WWE didn’t mention it and leaves Punk in a iffy spot a month away from WrestleMania. We’re talking about the same company and players here that had a golden angle with Punk being gone from WWE while champion and couldn’t contain themselves.

I actually hope he doesn’t return. I don’t want to see him added to Batista/Orton. If anyone gets added to that it should be Daniel Bryan after beating Triple H. What is left for him if not being in the Batista/Orton match?

  4. I see your point, but, and again all speculation since I personally don’t think he’s going to be back (would like to be wrong though), if I were booking all this I would give Punk the title coming out of Wrestlemania and then, in Bryan’s hometown, have Punk put over Bryan on his way out. Or if you wanted, after Punk wins the title at Mania and DB beats HHH, you have Punk get on the mic and say he wants to close Mania with a main event worthy of WMXXX, and give a shot to a guy who truly deserves it. It would be fair booking wise with both men wrestling twice on the card. Then you close Mania with Punk/Bryan and everyone is happy. Of course it does involve hotshotting the belt which is not something I am a fan of.

  5. However, if you did do that it does have tie-backs to WMX with Bret and Yoko wrestling twice, and WMXX with the Benoit/Eddie moment.

  6. I think it’s more likely for them to play Punk’s music Monday night, but only for H to come out instead.

  7. I think it’s more likely that Punk doesn’t appear, and they don’t play his music. They haven’t addressed it yet, I don’t see them starting now.

If he isn’t there, then playing his music is going to piss off that crowd even more than they already will be. If they weren’t going to hijack the show before, they most certainly will if WWE is foolish enough to play his music.

I think RAW will come and go and the only mention of CM Punk will be the fans chanting for him. Which is pretty stupid. It’s not a situation like in 2005 when WWE fired Matt Hardy for no reason and fan support brought him back. CM Punk walked out; chanting for him makes no sense. If Vince McMahon fired him then sure, but that didn’t happen.
