Why Bad Shows Get Great Ratings

EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is a guest post written by Max Chennault A few strange television trends have emerged in the last few years.  Network schedules have filled up with all sorts of shows that, a mere decade ago, would have been totally inconceivable as working concepts for TV series.  The reality show fad - if it can still be called a mere fad - has changed the face of TV.  It has even fundamentally altered the programming of cable networks such as TLC, Bravo, Discovery and even the History Channel, which are now largely devoted to shows like Cake Boss, L.A. Ink, 17/18/19 Kids and Counting, Ice Road Truckers and Pawn Stars that claim to show their viewers a slice of life they might never have seen before. However, there are a few strange shows in this lot that don't quite seem … [Read more...]

Review: Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Host: Jerry Seinfeld Format:  Talk/Interview Website: http://www.comediansincarsgettingcoffee.com (also available on Crackle.com) Runtime: 11-18 minutes per episode Official Score: 4 Stars I think Jerry Seinfeld's "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" might be my favorite web series ever. I haven't seen that many web series, and I think people who don't really -love- comedy might be a little bit bored (after all, the show is exactly what the title says it is-- a couple of comics on a car ride and then getting a cup of coffee together) by it, but I absolutely love it. … [Read more...]

Review: The Untold History of the United States

“The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion (to which few members of other civilizations were converted) but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.” - Samuel P. Huntington With this ten part documentary series (now with two additional episodes on the new DVD release) The Untold History of the United States, Oliver Stone has cemented his spot as America’s most affable raconteur of radical and revolutionary subject matter. Stone is in a unique position to make a documentary such as this. I can think of almost no one else who could get a program of this type funded and aired on a major cable television channel. Moreover, even if someone else could, it wouldn’t be nearly as … [Read more...]

RIP: James Gandolfini

I didn’t expect to be awake at this late hour, but I have some horrible news to report, and write out of my system. In a hotel room, while on holiday in Rome, Italy, on June 19th, James Gandolfini has left this world. It is apparently a massive heart attack that did him in. I’m still trying to make the news register, while at the same time fighting against the cold reality of it. He was fifty-one years old. It’s strange the way people, especially celebrities (and more especially, the extremely talented, genius ones at that) can connect with you through their art in a way that makes their death resonate in the way typically reserved for that of a well known friend, or in rarer cases, a family member. This isn’t one of the latter cases for me. Roger Ebert’s death was, earlier this year, … [Read more...]

The Breaking Bad Anticipation Station (Part Duex)

Yes, it’s another Breaking Bad related post here today on Pulp Culture, as I am getting more and more hyped as August 11th and the premiere of the last eight episodes of the best television series of the past half decade or so (Sorry Mad Men, I like you too though, I swear.) gets closer and closer. So you can indeed expect more of the same as that luminous date approaches. I came upon this video while stumbling around on Youtube looking for, you guessed it, other Breaking Bad related videos to hold me over until that aforementioned start date. This is a great catch-me-up on the first four and a half seasons of the show. It’s a good half hour long so make sure you have time before you click the old play button, but it’s worth watching if you could use a little refresher on things … [Read more...]

Breaking Bad Teaser Released + Other Tidbits.

Oh hell yeah. Sunday, August 11th, the day all Breaking Bad fans have waited for over a year now will finally be upon us with the return of one of the greatest television dramas in the entire history of the medium. It’s definitely a bitter-sweet kind of deal though as this will be the final eight episodes of the series. I knew from the start though there was only a finite amount of story you can get out of a guy supposedly dying of cancer, who is also making his living in the meth business, but the story they have gotten out of it all thus far has been incredible. It’s certainly been a hell of a ride thus far. Truly this show has introduced some of the most classic characters in television history with Gus Fring, the badass enforcer ‘Mike’ played by Jonathon Banks, of course … [Read more...]

Boardwalk Empire Season 4 Teaser Video

So, as expected a new season of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire will be starting up this fall. I have either like or loved the first three seasons so far (I’d say last season was the weakest of the bunch, but it was saved by an amazing final two or three episodes). It is, along with Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, and Mad Men, my favorite currently ongoing TV series, and with two of those shows entering their last season’s this year, it looks like I will have to start searching around for something new to fill the void soon. I am left mostly underwhelmed by the promo video. I have no idea who the black guy in the video with Steve Buscemi is, who will apparently be the big bad for season four, but that’s alright, as there’s still plenty of time for them to get me hooked, and I’ve found from … [Read more...]
