Irrational Games Lays Off Almost Entire Staff, Essentially Shuts Down

It's one of those news post you hate to have to write, and yet is a common part of the industry. Irrational Games founder Ken Levine today announced that Irrational as we all know it has come to an end and all but 15 employees are being laid off. The talented studio brought us two of the most critically acclaimed games of the Xbox 360/PS3 console generation in BioShock and BioShock Infinite. The studio is preparing to roll out the final piece of DLC for BioShock Infinite, which released early last year. In a message posted by Ken on Irrational's website, the founder and creative director lays out that priorities are being refocused and he'll be leading a small team focusing on digitally released games with a strong narrative and a lot of replay value. While I’m deeply proud of what we’ve … [Read more...]

BioShock Infinite’s ‘Burial At Sea: Episode 1′ Is Coming In November

Irrational's highly anticipated episodic-DLC expansion for BioShock Infinite, Burial At Sea, today got a release date, and it's not far off. Players looking forward to Booker's and Elizabeth's Rapture adventure will get to go back to the city under the sea on November 12th. If you didn't purchase the $20 season pass and want to play Burial At Sea: Episode One when it releases, you're going to have to part with $14.99. Of course you can still purchase the season pass, so I would highly recommend that over buying this episode separately; the season pass nets you previous DLC, Clash in the Clouds, both episodes of Burial At Sea, weapon upgrades, a new infusion, and character skins. So, are you going to be downloading Burial at Sea when it releases on the 12th of November? Let us know in … [Read more...]

Review: BioShock Infinite (PC)

BioShock Infinite (PC [Reviewed], Playstation 3, Xbox 360) Developer: Irrational Games Publisher: 2K Games Genre(s): First person shooter Released: March 22, 2013 ESRB Rating: M – Mature I'll state it upfront: This game will be on my Game of the Year shortlist without a doubt and it's set a very high bar for the remainder of this year across the board. I know that's a bold claim and challenge considering this only March as I write this review but that's the kind of impression this game has left with me. I have the same feeling coming off this game as I did after I had finished playing the first Bioshock. I'd played a game that almost transcended the genre and was something special. Different. Bioshock 2 was a solid game but felt an overglorified excuse to revisit Rapture which was … [Read more...]

Review: BioShock Infinite (PS3/360)

BioShock Infinite (PlayStation 3 [Reviewed], Xbox 360, PC) Developer: Irrational Games Publisher: 2K Games Genre: First Person Shooter Released: March 26, 2013 ESRB Rating: M – Mature * A copy of this game was provided for review. Note: BioShock Infinite was played to completion on “Hard” difficulty. This first playthrough took between 10 and 11 hours to complete, and I did not seek out every collectible (sighting seeing or the voxphones) this time through. When I got my PlayStation 3 in 2009, I got a bunch of games to go with it. One of those was BioShock, and out of the entire stack BioShock was the very first one I played. My first PSN trophy was “Toaster in the Tub,” and it was also the first PS3 game that I beat. The original BioShock was an amazing experience with a … [Read more...]

BioShock Infinite Gets New ‘Beast of America’ Trailer

Above you'll find the newly released trailer for BioShock Infinite, which is coming to PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on February 26, 2013. BioShock Infinite is a first-person shooter currently in development at Irrational Games, the studio behind the original BioShock (which sold over 4 million units worldwide). Set in 1912, BioShock Infinite introduces an entirely new narrative and gameplay experience that lifts players out of the familiar confines of Rapture and rockets them to Columbia, an immense city in the sky. Game is still looking great, so I'm looking forward to this one. … [Read more...]

BioShock Infinite Delayed Until 2013, Will Not Be Shown At E3

Irrational's hugely anticipated BioShock: Infinite was due to be released this October, which naturally made it one the most anticipated  known games to be seen at E3. Ken Levine has issued a statement well in advance of E3 letting us know that 1.) the game will not be shown there, and 2.) it's been delayed until February 26, 2013. “I won’t kid you: BioShock Infinite is a very big game, and we’re doing things that no one has ever done in a first-person shooter,” Levine wrote. “We had a similar experience with the original BioShock, which was delayed several months as our original ship date drew near. Why? Because the Big Daddies weren’t the Big Daddies you’ve since come to know and love. Because Andrew Ryan’s golf club didn’t have exactly the right swing. Because Rapture needed one more … [Read more...]

The much anticipated title from Irrational Games, BioShock Infinite finally has a release date... it's hitting this October. October 16th to be exact, if you're in North America. It's October 19th for everyone else. Of course it will be available for PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360. “After BioShock, we had a vision for a follow up that dwarfed the original in scope and ambition,” said Ken Levine, Creative Director of Irrational Games. “BioShock Infinite has been our sole focus for the last four years, and we can’t wait for fans to get their hands on it.” If you've seen any of the trailers and gameplay footage of BioShock Infinite over the past year, then there's really no way that you aren't looking forward to this one (unless you just don't like awesome stuff for some reason). And … [Read more...]
