Destiny Is Something Special: Thoughts and Impressions From the Destiny Beta

July 29, 2014 // 4 Comments

I said I would refrain from posting my Destiny Beta impressions until the beta went offline, and sadly that time has come. So it’s time to begrudgingly write that piece and reflect upon many hours spent as an Awoken male Hunter. Despite saying I would spend more time with all three classes in the beta, I didn’t actually do that. I leveled up a Warlock to a measly level three and didn’t even bother with a Titan. I played the entire beta really with the same Hunter and had him fully maxed out (including all the extras you could upgrade after hitting the level eight cap) within [...]

Hands On With Bungie’s Destiny; Impressions From the Destiny Alpha

June 17, 2014 // 0 Comments

During Sony’s E3 conference a week ago, they announced that PS4 owners could sign up now to get in a special alpha session of Destiny beginning Thursday and ending Sunday night. Already super excited for Destiny for over a year (but especially since the E3 2013 reveal of it), I of course signed up immediately. Luckily, I was able to snag an alpha code from Bungie’s Twitter within four seconds of it being posted on Wednesday to get in the alpha a day earlier. Everyone who registered on the Sony site for the alpha got a code, so I ended up giving away my second code to a random user [...]

DEMOED! EA Sports UFC First Impressions

June 4, 2014 // 3 Comments

The demo for EA Sports UFC dropped yesterday on PS4 and Xbox One, and after spending an hour or so with it I’m beginning to like it… slowly. Much like EA Sports MMA, I find the controls to be needlessly complicated and not really thoroughly explained in the tutorial. If you came out of the tutorial understanding the submission system, then please explain it to me because I still don’t get it after quite a few fights. I understand the basic premise of it, but I just don’t get it. In time, I’m sure I will, but frankly I think the tutorial could be better. After [...]

Demoed! LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Impressions

October 23, 2013 // 0 Comments

Demoed! LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (PS3) Developer: TT Games Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Genre(s): Action, Open World Released: October 22, 2013 Price: $49.99 ESRB Rating: E – Everyone The latest LEGO game hit stores yesterday for basically every platform available (and it’s coming to PS4 and Xbox One as well). My first actually experience with a LEGO game came earlier this year with the Wii U exclusive LEGO City Undercover. I greatly enjoyed that game and have been looking forward to this Marvel themed one ever since. Unfortunately I’m going to have to wait until I buy the [...]

Quick Beyond: Two Souls Demo Impressions

September 29, 2013 // 0 Comments

Beyond: Two Souls, the latest from Quantic Dreams, hits store shelves on October 8th, but the demo drops this Tuesday (October 1st). GameStop was giving away PSN vouchers to download the demo a week early over on Facebook so I snagged one of those and ended up playing  through the demo last night. I never played Heavy Rain, outside of the demo. I didn’t care for the Heavy Rain demo at all. After playing this demo, I’m pretty sure that if you like Heavy Rain you’ll like this. Having said that, I actually enjoyed it (i.e. this style of game) this time. For the most part. [...]

DEMOED! NCAA Football 14 Impressions

June 21, 2013 // 2 Comments

NCAA Football 14 (PlayStation 3 [Demoed], Xbox 360) Developer: Tiburon Publisher: EA Sports Genre(s): Sports, Football Demo Released: June 18, 2013 Game Releases: July 9, 2013 ESRB Rating: E – Everyone   Tuesday, EA Sports released the demo for NCAA Football 14. I look forward to this every year because it signals that it is almost time for college football to start back up (a little over two months from now).  I reviewed Madden NFL 12 and Madden NFL 13 (twice, PS3 and Wii U), but here’s the thing… I’m not an NFL fan. I enjoy Madden, obviously from the score I give it, but when [...]

DEMOED! Fuse Impressions

May 17, 2013 // 2 Comments

Fuse (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360) Developer: Insomniac Games Publisher: EA Genre(s): Action, Third Person Shooter Releases: May 28, 2013 Price: $59.99 ESRB Rating: M – Mature   I was pretty excited when Insomniac revealed Overstrike at E3 back in 2011. It was actually my favorite trailer from any presentation that year. I liked the look of it and the apparent humor, and although I am a PlayStation 3 gamer was happy to see that Insomniac was going multiplatform so that more people could enjoy their outstanding work. And then the game fell off everyone’s radar, only to come back later [...]

DEMOED! Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Impressions

April 30, 2013 // 0 Comments

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (PSN, XBLA, PC) Developer: Ubisoft Montreal Publisher: Ubisoft Genre(s): First Person Shooter Released: April 30, 2013 (PSN), May 1, 2013 (XBLA, PC) Price: $14.99 ESRB Rating: M – Mature Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is the new standalone expansion for Far Cry 3, except it has nothing to do with Far Cry 3. This game is a throwback to the 80s, and quite funny at that. The demo for the game, which is what I’m talking about here, is very short. At the same time, it does exactly what a demo should do… make you want to buy the game, and I will eventually. The story is [...]

Quick Daily Review #57: God of War – Ascension Demo [Video Game]

February 26, 2013 // 0 Comments

Quick Daily Review #57: God of War – Ascension Demo [Video Game] Developer: Sony Santa Monica Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment America Platform: Playstation 3 God of War: Ascension, the prequel to the God of War games, hits stores on March 12th, but the single player demo hit the PlayStation Store today. So today marks the first time the QDR has been a video game demo review. A lot of folks were worried that the single player of this game would suffer due to the inclusion of the multiplayer mode since Ascension marks the first time a God of War game has had multiplayer.  After [...]

Wii U Impressions After One Day; Nintendo Has Changed The Game

November 19, 2012 // 7 Comments

I was able to go to Best Buy yesterday morning and purchase I believe the last Wii U Deluxe system they had shortly after 10am. I’ve played it a good bit since then and I’m now comfortable enough with the system to feel like writing up some quick impressions of the system and the GamePad. Wii U is really quick and easy to set up. Both the Basic and the Deluxe versions come with a HDMI cable and a sensor bar. The system also includes a massive power brick. I look at my PS3 and just for the life of me can’t figure out why this big thing is necessary. I mean the brick is huge. [...]

Trailer Thoughts: WWE ’13 Launch

October 29, 2012 // 1 Comment

Trailer Thoughts is a new frequent series that will be featured on Vortex Effect. Instead of simply posting game trailers thrown our way by PR people, we’re going to provide thoughts on the trailer and score the trailer’s effectiveness on a Hyped/Meh/Soured scale. THQ released the official WWE ’13 launch trailer today, and you can watch the almost 2:30 trailer above. The game releases tomorrow for PS3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii. Official trailer description: The official launch trailer for WWE ’13, featuring the all-new “Attitude Era” Mode, Predator [...]

Demoed! “I Am Alive” and I’d Rather Play Something Else

October 28, 2012 // 0 Comments

Demoed! is a new frequent series that will be featured here on Vortex Effect. Each time, we’ll write about a demo for a game that has been out for a while that we haven’t played, or a game that is coming out soon. These are mini demo reviews, and thus the scores are not “official TVE scores” nor are they added to our Reviews index.  I Am Alive (PSN [Demoed], XBLA, PC) I’ve been wanting to try Ubisoft’s I Am Alive ever since the game came out earlier this year, and even though a demo for the title went up on PSN in April I just never got around to it. [...]
