New Video Game Releases for the Week of November 16th – 22nd

New Game Releases

This week is one of the biggest weeks in gaming, so it's the perfect time for this weekly feature to return. Every system is getting some highly anticipated games this week, and believe it or not Wii U is getting a third party game (that came to other consoles earlier this year and is a really good game). Here are the games releasing this week: November 17th - Reverse Side (Steam) - Soul Axiom (Steam) November 18th - Watch_Dogs (Wii U) - Dragon Age Inquisition (PC, PS4, XONE, PS3, X360) - WWE 2K15 (PS4, XONE) - Far Cry 4 (PC, PS4, XONE, PS3, X360) - Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, XONE) - LittleBigPlanet 3 (PS4, PS3) - Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (PS3, X360) - Escape Dead Island (PC, PS3, X360) - Construction Simulator 2015 (Steam) - Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F 2nd (PSV, PS3) - Never Alone … [Read more...]

Opinion: Assassin’s Creed Unity Review Embargo, Release Day Sales, and the Myth of Anti-consumer Practices

Another day, another “controversy” in gaming. This one centered around review embargoes and Ubisoft supposedly being “anti-consumer.” For those who don’t know, some games “journalists” and reviewers are trying to make a big stink about the fact that the embargo for reviews of Assassin’s Creed Unity ended at noon on Tuesday, roughly 12 hours after the game officially released. This is supposedly anti-consumer because Ubisoft “knew” the game would review “poorly” and thus was trying to stifle those poor reviews to sucker folks into purchasing the poor game without first reading a review. Except for all its apparent flaws, Unity hasn’t reviewed poorly. The PS4 version has a 77 Metacritic average and the Xbox One version has a 76 Metacritic average. Last time I checked, 7’s (or 70’s) were … [Read more...]

Now Gaming: What We’re Playing This Week (November Week 2)

It's the second week of November, smack dab in the midst of a ton of game releases, so it seems like the perfect time to introduce the first of many new weekly features to begin over the coming months. This is Now Gaming, and as you can may have gotten from the title, it's all about the games we here at Vortex Effect are playing now. Joining myself (Gary, Editor-in-Chief) is our Reviews Editor Brian Hall, PC Editor Eric W., and Features Editor Jules. Now that you know the cast, here's what we're playing this week. Playing: Pix the Cat (PS4) Pix the Cat was one of the October free PS+ games. I had never heard of it until Sony said it was going to be free for Plus members. It's actually one of the first games in a long time that I've began playing really knowing absolutely nothing about … [Read more...]

Just Cause 3 Announced For PC, PS4, and Xbox One

Game Informer revealed their latest cover today, and it is Just Cause 3, as you can see from the image above. The game, developed by Avalanche Studios, is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Thank goodness it isn't cross-gen. Game Informer notes that for their coverage they were able to spend "several hours" with the game, and had this to say of the experience: The time flew by as we tried out the vastly improved parachute and grapple mechanics, terrorized the latest dictator’s well-defended bases, and soared through the sky with the all-new wingsuit. Just Cause has never played this smoothly, and as you’ll see in the cover story launching digitally today, it’s never looked this good. I really enjoyed Just Cause 2. Thought it was an absolute blast. I'm anticipating this one, but I am … [Read more...]

Review: BlazeRush

BlazeRush (PS3 [Reviewed], PC) Developer: Targem Games Publisher: Targem Games Genre(s): Arcade Racing, Indie Released: October 28, 2014 (PC), November 4, 2014 (PS3) ESRB Rating: E10+ - Everyone 10+ BlazeRush is a fast paced action racer with an isometric almost slanted top-down perspective. It harkens back to classic Micro Machines with combat and Mario Kart style boosters. The game features a career mode that largely feels like one big tutorial. Here you'll do things like complete solo laps within a certain amount of time, learn about weapons and power-ups, and of course race against bots. Naturally the actual racing part of the campaign is the best part of it, and it comes in a few different flavors. There's the standard three lap race in which you try to be the first one to cross the … [Read more...]
