Dungeon Siege III PS3 Demo Impressions

Dungeon Siege III

I checked out the PS3 demo for Dungeon Siege III today, and since it was a game that I had in my Amazon wishlist, I received some good news from playing the demo: it  just saved me $60.

To be fair and honest, I’ve never played a Dungeon Siege game before. But, what I had read about this one made it seem like it would be a good RPG and I’m trying to get back into RPG games. So while I can’t compare this one to the previous Dungeon Siege games, which people apparently like, I can say that the demo is absolute crap and I hate almost everything about this game.

Never has a demo so turned me off of a game before. The only saving graces for Dungeon Siege III, based on the demo, is that the combat is okay and the menu looks great. Everything else is horrible to me though. I’m not a gamer who thinks graphics are everything, but this game looks bad; it’s like a free-to-play MMO that’s a few years old. I say “a few years old” because newer free-to-play games like Vindictus look so much better than this. The slanted top down camera angle, especially when zoomed out, only makes it look even worse… and I occasionally like that old school style. The camera is really awful though.

Of course graphics aren’t everything, so the real killer for me is the rest of the bells and whistles that make up the gameplay. Once was enough of this demo for me, so I didn’t bother trying out the fire lady, but the guy moves incredibly slow. Slow movement doesn’t mix well with super boring play. As a matter of fact, everything seems slow. I said the combat was decent but that was being generous; it’s basically spam X to attack with a sword and occasionally do so magic/ability. Obviously there’s a little more to it than that, you’ll want switch stances, block, and generally do some defensive stuff.

The dialogue options were okay, really starting to be standard at this point, but the voice acting isn’t the best; which fits well with the rest of the dull nature of the game (voice acting really doesn’t matter to me, I still like games with just text, although it is nice when the voice acting is good). The loot system and upgrades/level up seemed like it would all be decent as well.

I’m just really negative on this after playing this demo though. I don’t think I’d pick it up out of a bargain bin for $10. Yes, I know, it isn’t fair to completely judge a game based on the demo… but unless the demo is vastly different from the retail version (and it won’t be), I’ll stand by my opinion that the game will be absolute crap. I’m sure there’s people out there who will enjoy it, but not me.

I have a HUGE history with the DS franchise. In Dungeon Siege I had so much pull it wasn’t funny. I was also in the 3 most elite clans the game had to offer DTC, ArA FF, and SW.

Seeing this brought back memories. Too bad this one kinda seems to suck. I thought maybe it was time to dust off the old DS handle and start whoopin’ some ass again.

  2. This series has just never been that good. The feedback I’ve seen on this demo has been absolutely brutal and I think it’s time to finally just stick a fork in the series. I have no interest whatsoever.

  3. Thanks for the warning, I was going to pick this up next week.

  4. Ouch. I had never even heard of this series until this past week, but it sounds like something to pass over altogether. Too bad.
