Late Thursday night UFC fighter Thiago Silva was involved in an altercation with multiple people at the Pablo Popovitch Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Center. The altercation allegedly saw Silva brandish a weapon while threatening patrons of the center before leaving and barricading himself in his own house. Eventually he turned himself into police. The UFC released a statement on the events:
“This evening, we were made aware of a situation involving Thiago Silva, we are in the process of gathering the facts and have no further comment at this time.”
Since then official charges have been made public. Silva is being charged with two felony counts of attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and non-violent resisting arrest/obstructing justice.
NBC’s Miami affiliate released the following details of the incident:
The armed suspect went to the school at 777 E. Oakland Park Blvd. and threatened the people there, but no one was injured, said the BSO, which was called about the situation at about 7:45 p.m.
The suspect then went to his home and locked himself inside it, according to the BSO.
The SWAT team responded to the scene, and authorities were trying to establish contact with the suspect, the BSO said.
*BSO=Broward Sheriff’s Office. Silva is currently being held without bail in Broward County Jail.
Silva was next scheduled to compete a UFC 171 on March 15th, obviously the contest is severely doubtful at this point. It should also be noted that as of this morning the bout has been removed from UFC’s website.
UPDATE: The Sun-Sentinel has released the following based on the police report:
Shortly before 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, according to the report, Thiago Silva drove to the Popovitch Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Center, 777 E. Oakland Park Blvd., where his wife was training with her boyfriend, Pablo Popovitch. The report said Thiago Silva continuously honked his car’s horn.
Thaysa Silva told investigators that her husband appeared extremely intoxicated, was holding a Glock pistol and demanded she bring Popovitch outside or he would “go into the gym and start shooting everyone,” the report said.
After Popovitch went outside, he too was threatened at gunpoint the report said, before he and Thaysa Silva were able to run inside the gym, lock the door and call 911.
Silva also allegedly put the gun in his wife’s mouth and threatened to kill her. He also allegedly sent a text to his wife saying “I am going to hire someone to kill you and I am gonna move my girlfriend in.” The couple has been separated since 2012.
Dana White has also said that Thiago Silva will never fight in the UFC again based on the details that have since come out.
Silva’s lawyers were able to reduce the felony attempted murder charges to aggravated assault with a weapon
