UFC Fight Night 36 Preview

The UFC returns tonight for UFN 36 from Brazil.  The card is headlined by a five round bout with possible title implications as Lyoto Machida looks to stay unbeaten since dropping down to Middleweight and faces former Gegard Mousasi.  What I find strange about the contest is the fact that it seems that most are making it seems as if it is a forgone conclusion that Machida will win this fight.  While Mousasi isn’t ranked in the UFC as a Middleweight that is only because this is his first bout in the UFC in that division.  As a former veteran of Pride, Dream and Strikforce Mousasi is more than capable of holding his own at 185 and in fact holds a victory over the #3 ranked Middleweight Ronaldo Souza.  You also need to consider that Mousasi has finished 29 of his 34 victories, so I think this fight certainly could be a lot closer than people are giving it credit for.  I also find it strange that Machida could be in the running for a title shot with a win yet the same offer doesn’t seem to apply to Mousasi.

The co-main event is a hard one to call.  On one side we have the wrestling heavy grinding attack from Francis Carmont, while the other features the always dangerous striker and submission ace.  While Carmont is riding an eleven fight win streak, the fight with “Jacare” is a definite step up in opponent.  Training out of Tri-Star with the likes of Georges St. Pierre has certainly paid off greatly in Carmont’s career but it’ll be interesting to see how he deals with an opponent like Ronaldo as well as the hostile crowd he’ll be facing.

It should also be interesting to see if Erick Silva refines his fighting style coming off the loss.  Silva has certainly shown a ton of potential but an over eagerness to finish his opponent and throw caution to the win has proved to be his downfall so far.  If he’s able to control his emotions and fight more disciplined then he could prove to be a hell of a match-up for anybody.

  1. I did not know Machida moved down to middleweight… I recall it wasn’t too many years ago where he was in the same category (with certain fans anyway) with GSP, Silva, and currently Jones as that unbeatable karate machine.

Is he sticking with this weight class or is this just a one off?

  2. Plans on sticking with it. He looked pretty good in his MW debut against Mark Munoz. He had mentioned fighting in the weightclass before but he didn’t want to fight Anderson Silva since they were friends.

  3. Not wanting to do huge money fights because you are friends with someone is a rant for another day, but yeah, that always annoyed me. Same like it does with Cormier and Cain (although Cain would slaughter him probably, friend or not)… Just fight, and then still be friends after.

  4. Yeah I hate that concept myself especially when you knowingly fight in a weight class where a friend you won’t fight is the champion. I’m like you, when you are on that professional level just fight, it’s still a win/win for your champ as the belt goes back there regardless. That’s the only good thing about Silva losing the belt. Dana didn’t want to do the Belfort fight again, Machida wouldn’t fight Sivla, Souza wouldn’t fight Silva so you were lacking on possible contenders had he beaten Weidman. Of course that didn’t stop me from rooting for Silva, but him losing certainly was best for the division.

  5. As the night progresses I will be updating the original post with live results
