The rematch between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson finally has a date, September 27th at UFC 178. There was a little controversy as the UFC had pushed to have the bout in August and even letting it be known that Gustafsson had signed the bout agreement while Jones had not leading people to speculate that perhaps the fight wouldn’t happen. After meeting with UFC officials on Thursday Jones had the following to say with regards to the bout:
“There was never an issue with a contract. I was traveling and finally got to Vegas and got to talk with Dana and Lorenzo. We talked and September 27th, I’ll be fighting Gustafsson.”
“I think Cormier is the tougher fighter, but the fans want to see me fight Gustafsson. There was never an issue with taking the Gustafsson fight. The issue was that my brother is getting married in July and I would have preferred a later date. I didn’t want to go this early and i would have preferred to go later in October or November. It is what it is. We have a date now, Sept 27th. This was a personal decision for me. I will be at my brother’s wedding and have a proper training camp.”
The date change though seems very poetic as the bout will take place 1 year and six days after their first bout at UFC 165 and will take place in the same exact arena. Their first fight is considered by many to be last year’s fight of the year and was by far the biggest test Jones has ever faced. While Jones won a hard fought decision there were those who thought the fight was close enough that an argument could be made that Gustafsson won. At UFC 178 we will find out what kind of adjustments each man has made.
