Destiny Daily 12/4/14: Xur Returns Tomorrow, Daily Bounties, Thoughts on Exotic Changes

Destiny DailyI had a fairly productive day in Destiny yesterday. I got my Warlock up from level 15 to Light level 26. Of course it’s easy to do that when you already have three pieces of legendary gear and an exotic waiting for when you hit 20. I’m not going to bother upgrading any of it though, as I’m just going to wait and get the better gear that is coming out with The Dark Below on Tuesday.

Xur returns tomorrow, and for the first time in forever, I don’t care. I don’t care because I don’t have the strange coins to buy anything and can’t do the Weekly to get any. Here’s hoping he brings something that you guys and gals want though.

When The Dark Below drops on Tuesday, some more changes are coming to exotics that have made a lot of folks mad. The new exotics that are part of the expansion pack have a higher attack or defense base. So that current exotics aren’t rendered useless compared to the new ones, Bungie is allowing players to upgrade their current exotics. Each Friday, Xur will have a selection of exotic weapons and armor that players will be able to upgrade if they have it. In order to upgrade, you’ll need the exotic weapon or armor, and it doesn’t matter if its fully upgraded or not upgraded once, an exotic shard (you get it for either dismantling and exotic or buying it from Xur for seven strange coins), and a whopping 7,000 Glimmer. This will give you a new version of your exotic, but you’ll have to upgrade it again.

Now I don’t know what the base for the upgraded versions will be, but I’m guessing for weapons it’ll probably be 300. I don’t really have a problem with this upgrade method, and have several exotic weapons fully upgraded that I’ll be wanting to upgrade. They’re saying that exotics will level up faster, so it doesn’t seem like its going to be as much of a grind as it was to originally level up the gun. We’ll see. I get it, they want people to play their game, and part of that includes grinding. I can see why people are upset about, but it’s not bothering me.

Daily Heroic Mission: Scourge of Winter

Location: Ishtar Sink, Venus

  • Hunt and Kill Draksis, the House of Winter’s Kell, hiding deep in the caves of the Ishtar Sink.

  • HEROIC – Enemies appear in greater numbers and are more aggressive.
  • LIGHTSWITCH – Minions of the Darkness deal much more melee damage.

  • Cryptarch Engram
  • Vanguard Marks +5
  • +4800 XP (lvl 20) l +6000 XP (lvl 24) l +7500 XP (lvl 28)
  • Ascendant Material (lvl 24) l 2 Ascendant Materials (lvl 28)
  • 10 Spirit Bloom (lvl 20) l 12 SB (lvl 24) l 16 SB (lvl 28)

Second time this week for this mission to be the daily. Keep the enemies in front of you, which on this mission isn’t hard to do at all, and you should have zero trouble.  Take an Ice Breaker and when you first enter where the Kell is, stand on the rocks and snipe the enemies. They can’t shoot back at you because of the distance; you can clear the whole area in a couple of minutes, and be on your merry way.

For Draksis, I recommend standing in the door way and shooting his guards and other enemies while he is sitting on his throne. Don’t shoot him until you kill the others. Once you shoot him, and you should be using a sniper at this point, he’ll stand up and you’ll be able to get a few more shots off before he hides behind a pillar. Don’t move backwards of the door way, and don’t move forwards out of the doorway and then try to go back through it. You’ll end up being locked out of the room, or die by being crushed by the door, which will respawn you outside of the room and you’ll still be locked out, which will force you to run back outside the ship and jump over the edge. Just kill the enemies, enter the room, and let the door close behind you to trap you inside with the Draksis and the trash that spawns.

I say don’t worry about the other enemies (but keep moving/jumping, and don’t let them melee you) and focus on Draksis. Machine gun or rocket launcher, hand cannon, and a sniper rifle if you’re quick enough and you should take him down quickly without issue.

That’s all for today Guardians. Remember Xur comes tomorrow, so be getting those strange coins from the Weekly if you haven’t yet and are able. The Dark Below launches Tuesday; so it’s almost here!

  1. Gary, I read you daily (except Saturdays and Sundays, of course) but you gotta stop telling readers to bring an Ice Breaker. We all don’t have Ice Breakers and that’s your Number 1 suggestion for every mission. We would like to know your thoughts about the best way to succeed at each Daily regardless of weaponry. Keep up the great work and thank you for your tireless postings.

    • Haha, sorry. It’s my favorite weapon, but going forward I’ll make an effort to stop naming weapons and just start saying “your best sniper rifle” or whatever. Thanks for bringing that to my attention, and thanks for reading daily!

      • Unless Xur is as kind to me tomorrow as he has been to you lately. Sitting on 39 Strange Coins just waiting to pounce on … you guessed it! An Ice Breaker! Thanks again for being so dedicated to the Destiny Daily.

        • I’ll be hoping he brings an Ice Breaker for you. If I had to guess though, I’d say it’s about time the Gjallarhorn made its second appearance. I hope not, because I’m going to be able to have the strange coins to buy it. But that’s my guess.
