Quick Daily Review #2: Taken 3 (2015)

Taken 3 (2015)

The first Taken movie pretty much created a genre of its own. It was a smart fast paced thriller, the sequel was stylistically appealing but from a story standpoint was just a confusing mess that I absolutely hated. This movie has almost no style, and director Olivier Megaton (real name) must have broken some kind of record for yelling cut in this thing, but the story, for stupid action movie standards, is easy enough to follow. Add in Liam Neeson being Liam Neeson, even if it is an unneeded retread and he’s half asleep, is still a pretty strong anchor to tie any movie to. See this only if you are okay with bad 80s style action movies, if not, it is certainly nothing special you need to go out of your way for. One of the weird things in this movie is that Forest Whitaker’s detective character gets WAY TOO MUCH SCREEN TIME…. I would have much preferred to take about fifteen or so minutes of his screen time and given it to the chief villain here, who as it were, appears only at the very beginning, and then a little before the ending. I’d read so many bad reviews for Taken 3 or Tak3n that I almost decided to not even watch it. However, I am too big of a Liam Neeson fan to do that so watch it I did. I think going in with such low expectations helped me enjoy it more. First off yes, the premise here is so completely convoluted and ridiculous (and there’s even an asinine SWERVE in there which I won’t spoil, but probably don’t have to…) and all that but I found there was still just enough here to give this one a barely passing grade.

  1. But! But! Liam Neesons is my jam. :(

    • He’s my jam too! If you’re a big Liam fan, go ahead and see this and turn off the brain a bit. It’s just good enough to not be terrible. However, if you’re looking for a GOOD Liam movie from this past year seek out a Walk Among The Tombstones. That one is GREAT, assuming you haven’t seen it already.

  2. Not surprised they went to the well too many times.

    • Yep. This is like the modern version of Charles Bronson and the Death Wish series. This movie is about as good as “Death Wish 4” (not a compliment) that said, if they are gonna do another Taken, and they are modeling after that series they could do a lot worse than the campy greatness that was Death Wish 3.

  3. This never needed a sequel, let alone a third entry.

    Hollywood, just…
