Earlier today, Bungie announced that the next expansion, House of Wolves, will be releasing on May 19th. Now, Bungie has released a “calendar of events,” detailing exactly what they’ll be revealing about the new DLC in the weeks leading up to its release.
The biggest news though is the announcement that House of Wolves will not contain a new raid:
“House of Wolves will not have a Raid activity. We didn’t make this decision lightly. Our team has been humbled by the reception of Raids in Destiny and we are creating a new Raid for a release later this year. House of Wolves will have a new cooperative end game activity focused on variety, replayability, and skill – a new battle Arena called The Prison of Elders.”
I’m not going to lie, I’m disappointed by this. I have a regular group that runs Crota’s End and Vault of Glass weekly now, and we were all looking forward to running the House of Wolves raid with each other while going in blind; not knowing any mechanics or cheese spots.
It would be one thing if this Prison of Elders Arena mode was for six players, but the fact that it’s only three is disappointing. The game needs more activity for six, or more, players, not three. We can only have three players for story missions, patrols, and strikes, so I don’t like that a new mode is coming that is also being limited to three people.
Prison of Elders, which we’ll find out all about on May 6th, sounds an awful lot like a horde mode. Odds are, since they mention variety, replayability, and skill, it’ll be wave based with modifiers (epic, juggler, lightswitch, angry, and maybe some burns). That’s fine. Horde mode is actually my favorite kind of multiplayer mode in most games, so on that front I’m excited to finally have the mode come to Destiny (I just wish it was for six, or even four).
I’d also like a horde mode end-game activity to be truly replayable. By that, I mean I want to be able to farm it by doing it as many times as I want in a week. Nightfalls, Weekly Heroic, and Raids are all easy as this point and nothing to run through. Only being able to do them once a week for rewards (sure, three times if you have three characters) is a necessary evil, but that shouldn’t be the case for every end-game event. I’d like for this Prison of Elders mode to be something I can repeatedly do and get rewards for it. Of course I don’t think that will happen.
Any way, with House of Wolves, we will apparently be able to upgrade our exotic and legendary weapons (and I guess armor too). We’ll find out more about that, and the Reef, next Wednesday… April 22nd.
On April 29th, we’ll find out all about the new competitive multiplayer mode Trials of Osiris and the gear it offers. And something is going to happen on Friday, May 8th, but Bungie just says “stay tuned!” for that.
