Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)
Director: Lorene Scafaria
Humanity is doomed. Earth has a date with a fast approaching asteroid several times bigger than the one which killed the dinosaurs. And it is on schedule to collide with it in about two weeks. To top it off, there’s nothing NASA or our best scientists can do to stop it. All the combined accomplishments, art, history, relationships, and assorted meaning that has accumulated on this planet over the past few billion years are about to be obliterated and rendered into a big meaningless eternal nothing. Now if that doesn’t sound like the perfect premise for a light hearted romantic comedy, I don’t know what is! Steve Carrell plays an insurance salesman named Dodge. Kiera Knightley plays his eccentric upstairs neighbor, Penny. The news of this impending calamity cues their “meet cute” moment, after Dodge’s wife leaves him and Penny’s fiancée tries to use her for a human shield in the ensuing riots. They embark on a journey to help Dodge find his long lost love from years back, but of course, will discover that they were meant to be with each other all along. While I thought this movie could have done way more with such an interesting premise as this, there are some genuinely sweet, and a few very funny moments. I felt like a little more creativity could have made all the difference here, as this movie flows along a little too predictably hitting all the spots you expect it to. And when you have a movie with as crazy and different a premise as this, I think you owe it to the audience to take more risks in the story department. That said, this is still a very worthwhile movie to kill two hours with, just as long as they aren’t your final two that is. Save those for a better flick.
