3000 Miles to Graceland (2001)

This movie, while both a critical and box office failure, is to me a good hidden gem example of a fun “garbage movie”. Take the preposterous plot that involves a large group of Elvis impersonators robbing a Vegas casino and then wind up turning on each other (Have mercy!) leaving the two alpha males to fight over the remaining prize. (They just could not go on together, with suspicious minds… Okay, I’ll stop) Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner are both huge Elvis fans so it’s easy to see the fun they’re having here. Russell of course famously played Presley in a made for TV biography early in his career. Christian Slater, who is in this film also has an interesting Elvis history in his films. In his early career high mark, True Romance, his character converses with a ghostly version of Elvis who gives him sage advice from time to time, and a few years ago Slater starred in the regrettable D-Movie (direct to DVD) version of this film entitled “Guns, Girls, and Gambling” (a movie so bad it makes this one look like high art by comparison) during which another group of Elvis’s plan a robbery and wind up appearing dead throughout the rest of the movie. This movie is strictly style over substance, and if you are a fan of the style there just might be enough macho testosterone to get you by the at times awkward pacing and overly long running time. There are plenty of scenes here meant to appeal directly to guys, including a main character lighting a cigarette and blowing up a gas station, just so he can see the explosion in the rear view mirror. Listen, I’m not saying this is a good movie by any means, but I saw it late at night a while ago, and as far as movies worth wasting a few hours of your life when you can’t sleep, you could do worse. This review has now left the building.
