Quick Daily Review #137: True Romance (1993)

TrueRomance-OddCity-Variant

True Romance (1993)

I do not think it is a stretch to call this the best Christian Slater lead movie ever produced. Not high praise when the next highest runner’s up include such classics as “Gleaming the Cube” and “Young Guns II” (AKA Brat Back Goes West – Part Duex). That said this is a hell of a movie, and Slater represents himself accordingly. This was also one of the first major movies written by a future star director/writer known as Quentin Tarintino, and it has of course many of the trademark attributes such as all the, at the time, revolutionary pop culture references and the extended self aware monologues. The best one in this movie is delivered by Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper, and is simply known as “The Sicilian Scene”, which would later be joined by “The Watch Scene” in Pulp Fiction as one of his best stand alone scenes. The story involves a young man, played by Slater, who falls in love with a “hooker with a heart of gold” played by Patricia Arquette. They get mixed up in some nefarious dealings when Slater tries to rescue her from her pimp, but does so at the same time as a major drug deal (that turns into a gunfight goes down) and in the confusion the boy accidentally escapes with several hundred thousand dollars worth of the gangster’s cocaine, which sets up the course of the rest of the movie. The best reason to see this is for the early Tarintino dialogue, which feels very comfortable coming from these characters. Slater does so well, I wonder why he didn’t become more of a staple in later Tarintino movies. Also featured well here are veteran actors Chris Penn and Tom Sizemore who play cops that riff off of each other effortlessly, and yes, Brad Pitt in one of the best cameo gems in movie history playing the couch bound stoner in a perfect send up of Sean Penn in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Great movie here, go check it out.
