Rocky V

It is not exactly breaking news, that out of all the Rocky movies, this one gets the most flack, when in reality I think with a different release date it might have been much more favorably regarded. This movie attempts the impossible though, as far as bringing a series that had shot into the stratosphere in terms of comic book level mania back into some semblance of the real down and dirty world in which the original movie had existed. At this point in time, there was just no getting that toothpaste back into the tube though as audiences went into this wanting the Rocky Balboa who whooped Clubber Lang and Ivan Drago, and instead got a down on his luck Rocky relegated to training young up and comer, Tommy Gunn, and struggling to be a father to his formerly spoiled rich kid son who now must grow up on the same mean streets that produced him. The final fight of this movie is not in front of thousands of screaming fans, but in a local street corner. This movie, viewed with an objective set of eyes is probably the best actual movie of the series outside of the first two, but in terms of the six films that have been released thus far, it is also by far the least amount of fun to watch and of course also explains its lackluster reputation. Still though, I enjoyed giving this underrated movie another try. I think this movie works best if you watching it out of sequence, or at least skip straight from Rocky II to this one, as the big ball of 80s cheese that was the previous two installments set a movie like this up for immediate failure.
