Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata Passes Away at 55

Satoru Iwata

Nintendo released the following statement today passing along the news of the death of CEO Satoru Iwata:

Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.

Mr. Iwata got his start in the games industry as a programmer at HAL Laboratory back in the 80s, where he helped create iconic Nintendo titles like Kirby, Earthbound, and Balloon Fight. In 2000 he joined Nintendo and worked on entries in the The Legend of Zelda, Mario, and Animal Crossing franchises. He was named President of Nintendo in 2002 and also assumed the role of CEO of Nintendo of America in 2013.

On behalf of everyone at Vortex Effect, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mr. Iwata.
