Classic Music Spotlight: Dinah Shore – “Buttons and Bows”

It’s Classics Appreciation Wednesday here on Vortex Effect, and this week we’re debuting the newest classics feature to the lineup: Classic Music Spotlight.

That’s not to be confused with “classical music,” although it is very likely some Mozart could end up being spotlighted at some point.

Instead, this is usually going to spotlight music from the 1920s-1950s, back when it was actually decent and worth listening to (unlike the popular crap put out today).

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Dinah Shore and her 1947 hit “Buttons and Bows.”

Smith’s Sentiment: This 1947 classic was written by Jay Livingston (music) and Ray Evans (lyrics).

The song was written for the film The Paleface starring Bob Hope and Jane Russell, and won the 1948 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The most popular version of ths song was performed by the delightful Dinah Shore.

Lyrics:

East is east and west is west
And the wrong one I have chose
Let’s go where I’ll keep on wearin’
Those frills and flowers and buttons and bows
Rings and things and buttons and bows

Don’t bury me in this prairie
Take me where the cement grows
Let’s move down to some big town
Where they love a gal by the cut of her clothes
And I’ll stand out in buttons and bows

I’ll love you in buckskin
Or skirts that I’ve homespun
But I’ll love you longer, stronger where
Your friends don’t tote a gun

My bones denounce the buckboard bounce
And the cactus hurts my toes

Let’s vamoose where gals keep usin’
Those silks and satins and linen that shows
And I’m all yours in buttons and bows

My bones denounce the buckboard bounce
And the cactus hurts my toes
Let’s vamoose where gals keep usin’
Those silks and satins and linen that shows
And I’m all yours in buttons and bows

Gimme eastern trimmin’ where women are women
In high silk hose and peek-a-boo clothes
And French perfume that rocks the room
And I’m all yours in buttons and bows
Buttons and bows, buttons and bows
