Destiny Daily 6/22/16: The Wakening, Rumble, Tower Talk – A Reason to Play Everyday

It has been a long time, but Destiny Daily is finally back. I know what you’re thinking, “but Patriot, Destiny Daily has been popping up sporadically for weeks now!” And that’s true, I’ve been doing a trial version of Destiny Daily again recently. But it’s been the stripped down version that it was before I eventually quit doing it  altogether.

I mean the actual, original, Destiny Daily is back. The one that wasn’t just listing the bounties and heroic for the day, but the one that also served as my Destiny game log where I wrote about my experiences in Destiny, what I’d like to see, opinions on the current state of the game, and tips for bounties and the heroic. The Destiny Daily with some substance that I enjoyed writing everyday for about five and a half months during the vanilla Destiny and The Dark Below days.

The format is somewhat the same, but laid out differently. I’ll still do a small intro each day, and then we’ll go over the Daily Heroic and Crucible, and then the Daily Vanguard and Crucible bounties. After that’s done, there’ll be one or sometimes two other sections: The Adventures of PatriotPaine and PatriotPaine’s Tower Talk.

The first one is the game log, the second one is thoughts about the game or things I’d like to see change, be added, and so on. Today, it’s Tower Talk.

So with that out of the way, let’s jump right in with a look at today’s Daily Heroic.

Another year one mission. The video above is definitely an old one, as you can see I was 32 Light there and the lightswitch modifier was active (more on this later).

It’s an easy mission, and certainly easier now than it was back then. If you’re a Gunslinger, have some fun by using Sleeper Simulant to kill the four wizards guarding the shard and then use your Golden Gun (with Celestial Nighthawk) to one shot the Soul of Crota as soon as it can take damage.

Also, today’s mission pairs great with a number of bounties that are available.

Destiny Daily Vanguard Bounties

Bounty Description
Cosmodrome Reconnaissance Collect resource nodes, open chests and kill enemies in the Cosmodrome.
Exploding Light Get 20 grenade kills.
Sunbreak Challenge Get 30 kills with Solar abilities.
Heavyweight Get 5 kills within 3 seconds 5 times using a Heavy Weapon.
Hive Hunting Defeat 50 Hive.
Hunting the Exalted Defeat 10 Hive Majors or Ultras.

You can complete five of the bounties in today’s Daily Heroic, two of which you won’t even really have to try for (Hive Hunting and Huning the Exalted). If you don’t get five of them during the Daily, fire up the Siege of the Warmind mission and use the Hive in the beginning to mop up the rest while also completing Cosmodrome Reconnaissance.

Destiny Daily Crucible Bounties

Bounty Description
Press the Advantage In a team game mode, defeat 3 opposing Guardians while your team has the lead.
Eagle-Eyed Defeat 3 Guardians with headshots kills in one life.
Chain Lightning Defeat 2 opposing Guardians with a single Arc Blade activation.
Shields Up! Defeat 2 opposing Guardians while buffed by Ward of Dawn.
Sheathed in Flame Defeat 2 opposing Guardians in the Crucible during a single Radiance use.
Can’t Stop In Rumble, defeat 2 opposing Guardians in a single life.
Heavyweight Collect a Heavy Ammo crate in the Rumble playlist.
Team Medic As a Fireteam of 2 or more players, revive 3 Fireteam members who have been downed by opposing Guardians.

“A Reason To Play Every Day”

The patch last week contained a surprised that initially wasn’t even in the patch notes, something I had wanted to see since last September. I’m talking about the modifiers being added to the Heroic Strike playlist.

Ever since Taken King arrived, Destiny activities have been easier. The Weekly Heroic Strike, a staple throughout year one, was turned into just another strike playlist. Instead of being a specific strike for an entire week with three modifiers, it became a playlist where the strike changed and had only one modifier (heroic).

I always disliked that change, because it took the fun out of the Weekly Heroic. In fact, the random strike aspect of it really made it not be “weekly” at all. Sure, you were guaranteed one legendary engram per character and 30 legendary marks (10 for your first three completions, account based), whereas the year one Weekly Heroic guaranteed nothing but nine Strange Coins (if you completed on the hardest setting).

As of last week, the Heroic Strike playlist features three burns in addition to the heroic modifier. This makes the playlist standout and being more fun for the players. It absolutely needed to be done to breath some life into the Heroic Strikes. I’d argue that the nine Strange Coins should be put back as a secondary reward, and also that it should go back to being just one strike for the entire week.

While modifiers returned to the Heroic Strike, the Daily Heroic continues to be something I rarely care to do. Not because it isn’t rewarding enough (even though I don’t believe it is), but because of how easy the Daily Heroic is.

Throughout year one, the Daily Heroic was different than playing a mission on the heroic setting, because it was the only time a story mission would get a modifier in addition to the heroic one. It would be Heroic + Lightswitch, or Heroic + Juggler, and so on. More often than not, the Daily was never challenging, but the addition of something like a Lightswitch would make a player be slightly more cautious because stealth vandals could easily kill you in one sword hit.

Nowadays, the only thing that separates the Daily Heroic from just picking a mission and playing it on Heroic is that you get 15 Legendary Marks for doing the Daily. It’s a 240 Light activity with only the Heroic modifier. It might as well be normal difficulty. 240 Light is absolutely nothing when you’re five light shy of being 100 greater than that.

By now, I’ve bought literally everything the vendors sell that I want. There’s nothing that I can spend Marks on that I want. So the only thing they’re used for now is infusing stuff up, but at this point I have pretty much everything I want already at 335.

So because there is no challenge in it, and I don’t need the Marks (which are easy to get anyway because I dismantle 95% of the legendaries I get), I rarely do the Daily Heroic. I did the Daily Heroic just about every day throughout year one, because the modifier could make me be a little more cautious and because it was a good way to get planetary materials or a chance at a legendary engram, in addition to Vanguard Marks and Ascendant Materials.

I think the Daily Heroic needs to be reexamined. It should be endgame content that’s somewhat rewarding. Here’s the Regicide mission at 330 Light with Juggler or Exposure (better yet, make it both). Complete it and you get 15 Legendary Marks, 20 Wormspore, 5 Motes of Light, 3 Strange Coins, and a chance at a legendary engram as a post game reward.

I would play the Daily Heroic everyday. Partly because it’d be somewhat challenging again, and also because it’d be rewarding.

I also think that, in the future, Bungie needs to look into implementing a Daily Login reward like other games I have (although I’m mainly looking at Warframe here). Most days would be random, but set consecutive days would be locked in place (seven Strange Coins for logging in seven straight days, a Sterling Treasure at 25 days). You login the first time each day, and you may get two Motes of Light, or 4 Spinmetal, maybe a Fall 2015 emote, or a sparrow horn, a blue engram, and so on.

All of that would be pretty cool, I think. It’d give the players a reason to play everyday.

And that’s going to wrap up the return to original form of Destiny Daily. Future editions won’t always include both Adventures and Tower Talk, it will usually be one or the other (and sometimes both and sometimes neither).
