Smith’s Sentiment: I absolutely despise handicap matches. To me they make no logical sense and actively hurt everyone involved whilst making a mockery of wrestling’s “sport” side. So what happens here? Either Roman Reigns wins and retains his championship, which would mean the Universal Champion can’t even beat the US Champion in a two-on-one match, he loses by disqualification and keeps his title, or he loses the match and his title and thus Owens and Jericho become actual co-champions of a title.
None of those scenarios does anything positive for anyone, and I think this is a larger problem with RAW right now. It’s just garbage thrown against the wall that isn’t thought out in any way. I was going to be watching the national championship game and DVR’ing RAW anyway, because I’m an Alabama fan, but announcing a handicap match does nothing to even attempt to get me to tune in.
While I like that they’ve announced a match for RAW ahead of time, although I think RAW should take the Smackdown approach and announce matches for the next week during an episode, but this just isn’t an appealing match. I don’t see the benefit.
