Patriot’s Playing #2: Vikings Wolves of Midgard

Patriot's Playing

Last week I was playing Far Cry Primal, and I did achieve the goal I set out to do and got the platinum trophy for it on Sunday. Really fun game, will probably have a review of it soon. This week I’m playing an unexpected game. I received a copy of Vikings: Wolves of Midgard from Kalypso to review, and so I’m working my way through that.

Vikings launches for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on March 28th, and my review will go live on March 24th.

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard

This week’s Now Gaming will be fairly short because of that. I don’t want to say too much about the game. It’s a hack and slash, action RPG. If you’ve played Diablo, which I loved, it’s a lot like that and will definitely draw a bunch of comparisons to it. It’s not  a clone, but it’s familiar enough and that’s a good thing frankly because Diablo with a Norse mythology setting and story is very appealing.

The game is being developed by Games Farm, the guys and gals behind Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms and the Air Conflicts series.

Unlike Diablo, Vikings doesn’t really have classes in the traditional sense. You can play as either a Warrior (male) or Shieldmaiden (female). You have five deities, and the one you select at the start determines what your combat style is to begin the game. There’s Tyr (one handed weapons and a shield), Loki (dual wield weapons), Thor (two handed weapons), Skathi (bows), and finally Odin (staff). Each god/goddess has a passive and active Gift, and these gifts can only be used when you’re using the type of weapon set-up that’s tied to said god or goddess.

I’m still pretty early in the game. I’ve hit level 8. That doesn’t seem like a lot, but you’ll be leveling a lot slower here than you would in Diablo, so it actually takes some time. You level up by killing enemies and collecting their blood, which you then sacrifice to the gods at an alter.

There are four difficulties to the game, and also a Valhalla mode (hardcore from Diablo). I went with normal; I’m trying to review it, not get a platinum. Once you beat the game, you’ll be able to do a New Game + and then a New Game ++ until eventually you should be able to master all weapon types (you can only master two per playthrough).

I’m having a lot of fun with it, again still early in it. You can pre-order the game from Amazon, but I’d wait until the 24th when the embargo ends. That’s a Friday by the way. My review will go live at 9:00 am on the 24th if all goes according to plan. I hope to have the campaign finished by the end of Sunday and have a New Game + started.

If you’re into Norse mythology, or like Diablo style games, then this should at least be on your radar. Stay tuned. In the meantime, check out the trailer below:

What game(s) are you playing this week? Sound off in the comments and let us know.
