WWF 7/22/17 – Kurt’s Announcement, G1 Climax 27, Battleground Preview

Weekly Wrestling Feature

It’s Saturday night, and here on TVE that means it’s time for the Weekly Wrestling Feature. That’s right, WWF has been revived and actually this feature is going live on the site at exactly 6:05 pm EDT.

Since we’re bringing this feature back from a hiatus, I’ll say what you can expect from WWF this week and beyond. This is largely a recap of the week’s wrestling events (televised) with some opinion mixed in. Things like Wrestler of the Week and Match of the Week have been removed from the series, purely because I don’t get to see every single wrestling event that happens in a week and just don’t feel comfortable saying this is Wrestler/Match of the Week when there could be a person/match more deserving of it that I just didn’t see.

It has been a noteworthy week in wrestling for sure. Kurt Angle revealed that Jason Jordan is his son, Smackdown had its Battleground go home episode, and Killain Dain suffered his first defeat in NXT at the hands of Drew McIntyre who earned the right to face Bobby Roode for the NXT Championship at TakeOver: Brooklyn III in the process. ROH announced some matches for their co-promoted War of the Worlds UK event coming up and NJPW kicked off the G1 Climax 27 with four nights of action..

Tomorrow of course is the start of a new week, and it begins with Smackdown presenting Battleground on WWE Network. The event is headlined by a Punjabi Prison match for the WWE Championship between Jinder Mahal and Randy Orton. We’ll have a special  Battleground predictions edition of Deadly Venom going live on the site tomorrow morning and then late tomorrow night I’ll have the Battleground Review posted.

But before next week begins, let’s recap the week that was in professional wrestling.

WWF RAW Header

RAW 7/17/17 Results:
Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, TN

  • Bayley def. Alexa Bliss
  • Gentleman Jack Gallagher & Mustafa Ali def. The Brian Kendrick & Drew Gulak
  • Finn Bálor def. Elias Samson via Disqualification
  • Ariya Daivari def. Akira Tozawa via Match Stoppage
  • The Revival def. The Hardy Boyz
  • Roman Reigns vs. Samoa Joe ended in a No Contest

Miz and the Miztourage took out Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose during the opening segment. Also, Big Cass made a statement by laying waste to Big Show in a brawl.

This week’s RAW was hyped up to feature the reveal of Kurt Angle’s big personal announcement that could “ruin him.” A lot of people, myself included, assumed this was going to be some affair angle and a lot of us feared the worst in a Dixie Carter appearance. Thankfully that wasn’t the case.

Kurt revealed that he dated a girl in college and she gave birth to a son after they split up that he didn’t know about. This son was put up for closed adoption. It just so happens that this young man grew up to be a wrestler and eventually found his way to WWE.

The son was revealed to be Jason Jordan, making his RAW debut. That’s right, just because he’s Kurt Angle’s son, Jason Jordan gets to come to RAW and Smackdown gets nothing in return. That of course means the end of American Alpha as a tag team, meaning WWE’s obsession with splitting up face tag teams has now spread to Smackdown.

The Roman Reigns/Samoa Joe match ended in a No Contest thanks to interference from Braun Strowman, who destroyed both men. That means we still don’t know who will face Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at Summer Slam.

Next week, RAW will feature a match between Bayley and Sasha Banks where the winner will face Alexa Bliss at Summer Slam for the RAW Women’s Championship.

WWF Smackdown Header

WWE Smackdown 7/18/17 Results:
Legacy Arena, Birmingham, AL

  • Jimmy Uso def. Kofi Kingston
  • Mike Kanellis def. Sami Zayn
  • Becky Lynch def. Charlotte Flair
  • Kevin Owens & Baron Corbin def. AJ Styles & Shinsuke Nakamura

This was the go home show before this Sunday’s Smackdown exclusive PPV Battleground on WWE Network. We’ll have our predictions for Battleground posted tomorrow morning, but here’s the preview for the event.

WWF Battleground preview

WWE Smackdown presents Battleground 7/23/17 Preview:

  • Smackdown Tag Team Championship Match: The Usos (c) vs. The New day

Again, check back tomorrow for our Battleground Predictions and Preview edition of Deadly Venom. That prediction column will feature my predictions along with Sandman’s predictions.

WWF NXT Header

WWE NXT 7/19/17 Results:
NXT Arena @ Full Sail University, Orlando, FL

  • Ember Moon def. Ruby Riot
  • Oney Lorcan def. Danny Burch
  • No Way Jose def. Cezar Bononi
  • Drew McIntyre def. Killian Dain to become #1 Contender to the NXT Championship

We’re drawing ever closer to TakeOver: Brooklyn III and we now know that Drew McIntyre will be challenging Bobby Roode for the NXT Championship at that event. McIntyre was able to outlast Killian Dain in the battle of the undefeateds to become the number one contender.

It was a strong hour for NXT, and you can read my full review in The NXT Generation. If you missed it, go watch it ASAP. While there were three good matches, the match of the night as far as I’m concerned was Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch. A very hard hitting encounter.

The G1 Climax 27 is just getting started; there’s a lot of great New Japan Pro Wrestling action happening through the finals of the G1 Climax 27 on August 13th. In next week’s edition of WWF, we’ll rundown the results of night’s five through nine (Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday).

That’s going to do it for this week’s edition of the Weekly Wrestling Feature. WWF will return next Saturday night at 6:05pm ET and it’s going to be a big edition; we’ll recap five nights of NJPW’s G1 Climax 27, Battleground, RAW, Smackdown, NXT, ROH, and Impact. There’s a TON of wrestling going on next week and we’ll have it all covered right here in the WWF.

As stated earlier, tomorrow morning a special edition of Deadly Venom goes up as I’ll be giving my predictions for Battleground and that column will also feature Sandman’s Battleground predictions as well.
