Patriot’s Playing: Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen (#1)

Patriot's Playing

It has been awhile since I’ve last done one of these. Matter of fact, the last time was back in October when I was rediscovering Warframe. I want to change that and get it back to being a weekly thing here on the site, especially since it is suppose to be the “PatriotPaine Weekly Game Log.”

This week, I’m playing the same thing I was playing last week, which is Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen on PS4. I first discovered Dragon’s Dogma when it was a free game on PS3 as a PS Plus title. Played it and after a few hours of feeling so-so about it, fell in love with it. It ended up not only being an amazing, excellent game, but also became one of my all-time favorite games. It was the first RPG that I cared enough about to sit down and get the platinum trophy for.

Now I’m playing it again for the first time in a couple of years, and it didn’t take long once again become fully invested in it. It doesn’t hurt that the game looks great on PS4, whereas I was never a big fan of the visuals on PS3. It didn’t look bad necessarily, but it definitely looks better on a PS4 Pro.

I’m at the point in the game where I’m used to it again. And it took a little while to get back to that point. When I first started playing it again last month and up until last week, I’d play until I got up to the Come to Court quest and then start a new character.

Right now I have the character (and pawn) that I want and I’m in the groove with it, which means no more restarts. This is the character I will take through completion of the game, back through it on hard mode with New Game +, speed run with, and of course eventually hit level 200 with.

Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen Xena and Pawn

I’ve always been  a big fan of Lucy Lawless, she was one of my first celeb crushes back when I was a kid. I’ve been slowly rewatching Xena Warrior Princess (and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys) over the past few weeks, and so I made my character in the game Xena and I’m role playing it as that character. That means I’m playing as a Fighter, which I haven’t really done before. Well technically I’m leveling as an Assassin right now, but I’m still using the fighter loadout of sword and shield. Before I would always go either Strider or Magic Archer. I’m enjoying using the old sword and shield though, it’s been different because I always prefer a bow. Of course as an Assassin I keep a bow on me, just in case.

This time around, I decided to make my pawn also be Xena. And the reason for that was because I wanted m pawn to feel like a representation of my character in other players games. My pawn Xena is also a Fighter, but right now I’m doing 40 or so levels as a Warrior for the stat increases that come with that vocation and will also get a few Strider levels in for her as well. When she gets back to being a Fighter though, she’ll have the same weapons and same armor as my character. Again, I want it to feel like my character so I’m keeping everything identical as often as I can.

Originally, when I first created my Xena character, my pawn was a Strider/Ranger and was based on Gabrielle. I changed it up on one of the restarts for the above reason. So if you’re on PS4, feel encouraged to take Xena for a spin.

Right now, both myself and the pawn are level 29. I’m still relatively early in the game, in stage four of the main quest. The last thing I did was the trial of Fournival, and the next main quest I’ll be working on is killing the Griffin, which I’m looking forward to it because it was one of my favorite quests the first time I played through the game.

Expect to see more of Dragon’s Dogma covered in this series for the next several weeks, as my intention is to platinum the game once again (although it’ll be slightly harder on PS4 thanks to the inclusion of a lot of new trophies). Right now, it is my “main game” and will likely be so until sometime in May. This series was meant to be a game log, and for the foreseeable future it will largely be my Dragon’s Dogma game log. You can see my Xena and pawn Xena in the image above, in the future I’ll probably incorporate some video since the combat in this game is amongst the best ever.

Crimson Days Flaunting Dance Emote

Just because it is my main game doesn’t mean it’s my only game though. This week, I’ll also be spending more time with Destiny 2 than I have been. Crimson Days begins tomorrow and I actually want to grind for the Crimson Engrams and all the various rewards which means I’ll be doing some 2v2 crucible. The current crucible is already teamshooting and hand-holding, only 4v4, so it might actually be better 2v2. Plus it’s Clash and not Elimination based, so that’s a big improvement over the time the event happened in D1.

I’m also checking out The Void Rains Upon Her Heart, a bullet hell game on Steam, and may review it. Over the weekend I played through Doki Doki Literature Club at my brothers request. That’s definitely an interesting “game,” although visual novel is more appropriate, and you should certainly check that out on Steam if you haven’t already done so (it is free to play) and depending on how fast you read, will only take two hours or so to experience.

What games are YOU playing this week? Sound off in the comments and let me know.
