January 4, 2017 // 0 Comments

Classic Music Spotlight is part of Vortex Effect’s Classics Appreciation Wednesday’s. This week, the musical spotlight shines on the Bing Crosby classic, “Swinging on a Star.” Smith’s Sentiment: Released in 1944, “Swinging on a Star” was composed by Jimmy Van Heusen with lyrics by Johnny Burke. The song was first performed by Bing Crosby and released in the musical film Going My Way (1944 starring Bing Crosby). The song took home an Academy Award for Best Original Song. “Swing on a Star” has been covered many times, including the likes of [...]

Classic Music Spotlight: Petula Clark – “Downtown”

November 2, 2016 // 0 Comments

Classics Appreciation Wednesday’s have returned to Vortex Effect, and this week the spotlight shines on Petula Clark and her hit song “Downtown.” Smith’s Sentiment: Released in November 1964, Petula Clark’s “Downtown” (composed by Tom Hatch) became an international hit that took the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1965. The song won a Grammy Award for Best Rock and Roll Recording in 1965, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004. Most recently, the song has been featured in the television commercials for the WWE 2K17 video [...]

Pro Wrestling Post Merges Back With Vortex Effect

August 27, 2016 // 0 Comments

A few months back, I split wrestling from Vortex Effect and created a wrestling only site called Pro Wrestling Post. Looking back, that probably wasn’t a good idea and truth be told I should’ve learned that lesson a couple of years ago when we tried the same thing by splintering off the movie content with Cinema Vortex. As of today, Pro Wrestling Post no longer really exists as a separate website (it won’t officially die until next year when the domain expires). Instead, PWP has been merged back with Vortex Effect, but in a different way than it was before the split. If you [...]

Neverwinter Almost Killed The Site, But Seriously Updates Are Resuming

August 17, 2016 // 0 Comments

Apologies are in order. I let Vortex Effect and Pro Wrestling Post both go an entire month with absolutely nothing, which considering I was trying to rebuild this site and had just launched PW Post is pretty terrible. That’s no way to run a website. I got fairly addicted to Neverwinter when it released on PS4 back on July 19th. It basically consumed every ounce of free time that I could give to it, and even caused me to not play practically any Destiny in over a month, which has been unheard of for me since Destiny has been my go to since it released in September 2014. So with that [...]

Site News: Summer Clean Up Underway

July 6, 2016 // 0 Comments

This is just a quick post to say that I’m doing cleaning and maintenance on the site, and some parts of the site are currently broken. Cleaning wise, 1,054 posts have been removed. These are posts that were irrelevant to anyone today (if you still care about the date of the Assassin’s Creed Revelations beta, I can tell you that you missed it by a few years) and/or haven’t been viewed in years. The posts that remain are being recategorized and re-tagged, with the emphasis on making the site much more organized and user friendly. The old reviews are receiving fresh coats of [...]

Where’d The Wrestling Go? Introducing Pro Wrestling Post (

May 12, 2016 // 0 Comments

Last month I published a site address saying there was a renewed focus on pro wrestling here on Vortex Effect, and that going forward the site would be largely wrestling based. That’s not the case anymore. In fact, you may have noticed that there’s now zero wrestling content on the site. Even the “state of the site address” is gone. So what happened? That’s easy to answer; I moved it. I do have a bit of a renewed focus on wrestling. I have two projects in the works, one that I’m actively working on (some of you may know this to be a book I’m writing), [...]

Classic Music Spotlight: The Andrews Sisters – “Bei Mir Bistu Shein”

March 9, 2016 // 0 Comments

This week, the spotlight shines on the 1937 classic Andrews Sisters hit, “Bei Mir Bistu Shein.” Patriot’s Point: This Yiddish hit was composed by Sholom Secunda and Jacob Jacobs (lyrics) for the 1932 musical comedy “I Would If I Could.” In 1937, a lyricist named Sammy Cahn bought the rights to the song and rewrote it with English lyrics to fit with Swing music and got the Andrews Sisters to record it. At the time, the trio were still largely unknown and this became their first major worldwide hit, and got them a gold record. Lyrics: Of all the boys I’ve known [...]

Classic Music Spotlight: Al Dexter – “Pistol Packin’ Mama”

January 27, 2016 // 0 Comments

This week, the spotlight shines on the 1943-1944 classic Al Dexter hit, “Pistol Packin’ Mama.” Smith’s Sentiment: Al Dexter wrote and performed this song that topped the charts during 1944, although it’s the cover by Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters that is more well known today. The latter version appears in the hit game, Fallout 4. So thank you Bethesda for exposing a lot of younger folks to a timeless classic. Lyrics: Drinkin’ beer in a cabaret And I was havin’ fun! Until one night she caught me right, And now I’m on the run Lay that [...]

Classic Music Spotlight: Dinah Shore – “Buttons and Bows”

January 6, 2016 // 0 Comments

It’s Classics Appreciation Wednesday here on Vortex Effect, and this week we’re debuting the newest classics feature to the lineup: Classic Music Spotlight. That’s not to be confused with “classical music,” although it is very likely some Mozart could end up being spotlighted at some point. Instead, this is usually going to spotlight music from the 1920s-1950s, back when it was actually decent and worth listening to (unlike the popular crap put out today). This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Dinah Shore and her 1947 hit “Buttons and Bows.” [...]

November 15, 2015 // 0 Comments

Quick site announcement here. This Wednesday, we’re starting “Classics Appreciation Wednesday’s” here on Vortex Effect. As a result, the “Now Gaming” feature will be moving to a new day. To start with, beginning this Wednesday, we’ll have four features: Classic Gaming Quick Review Classic Wrestling Match of the Week Classic Music Spotlight TCM Movie of the Week In January, we’ll be bringing back the old “Classic Cinema Wednesday” review series… which will be shorter reviews than the previous ones. Why? Because there’s [...]

Site Maintenance Ongoing For Next Couple of Weeks

November 3, 2015 // 0 Comments

This is just a quick heads up that some “behind the scenes” maintenance on the site began and today and will be ongoing for the next two weeks or so. Nothing that will directly impact the site for most visitors, but just some general clean up. The number one thing that is being done is a complete clean up and revamping of our categories and tags, both of which have been a complete mess for far too long.  I’m getting that under control, but there are a lot of posts that need to be reclassified and the main thing is digging through all the tags and keeping only what needs to [...]

State of the Site Address: May 2015

May 27, 2015 // 3 Comments

The month of May has but a few days remaining; we’ll soon be in June which means 2015 will be half way gone. Seems like a perfect time to quickly talk about the state of Vortex Effect and the year that has been thus far. The banner says “monthly address,” but I doubt it. After all, this banner was made quite some time ago and I don’t feel like updating it. It has been a relatively slow year for the site. I quit doing Destiny Daily early on, and just brought it back (although actually playing House of Wolves has thus far prevented my writing it daily… it will [...]
