UFC 171 Preview

March 15, 2014 // 0 Comments

For the first time since 2008 the UFC will have a Welterweight champion not named Georges St. Pierre by the end of tonight.  The man whom most (myself included) feel defeated Georges St. Pierre, Johny Hendricks will look to defeat the reinvigorated Robbie Lawler.  After losing a decision to the champion GSP Hendricks vowed to never let the judges take something from him that he felt he earned.  Lawler on the other side has been reinvented since returning to the UFC and dropping back down to the 170 pound division.  Both men are known for having heavy hands.  Hendricks has secured 8 of [...]

Johny Hendricks Misses Weight, Title Fight In Jeopardy (Updated)

March 14, 2014 // 0 Comments

An interesting story has developed at today’s UFC weigh-ins for UFC 171.  The main event was expected to feature Johny Hendricks fighting Robbie Lawler for the UFC Welterweight title.  For a title fight both competitors must hit the weight limit exactly.  Johny Hendricks on his first attempt has weighed in as 171.5 lbs meaning he has two hours to lose a pound and a half.  While far from an impossible task doing so limits Johny time he has to rehydrate his body and may potentially play a factor into his conditioning for the fight. Per the rules of the Texas Athletic Commission if [...]

UFC Fight Night London Preview

March 8, 2014 // 0 Comments

This afternoon the UFC will premiere its latest Fight Night card on the UFC Fight Pass.  The man who gave Light Heayweight Champion Jon Jones his toughest fight to date Alexander Gustafsson will clash with unbeaten heavy-hitter Jimi Manuwa.  A lot of people are selling this as a lose-lose situation for Gustafsson but I just don’t think that’s true.  There have been a lot of talks about Alexander being right back in line for a title shot, something that has even been backed up by champion Jon Jones.  So while Manuwa may not be considered a top ten Light Heavyweight fighter at [...]

Vitor Belfort Removes Self From UFC 173 Title Fight

February 28, 2014 // 2 Comments

Following the NSAC’s decision to ban TRT Vitor Belfort has removed himself from his upcoming title fight with Middleweight champion Chris Weidman that was slated to take place in the state.  Belfort issued a statement late Thursday night stating the following: “The Nevada State Athletic Commission recently altered its policy and no longer will permit testosterone use exemptions, and will not permit a TRT program.  As other jurisdictions may follow suit, I am going to drop my TRT program and compete in MMA without it. Given the time constraints involved between now and my [...]

NSAC Bans TRT in Combat Sports, UFC Seemingly Follows Suit (Updated)

February 27, 2014 // 1 Comment

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (better known as TRT) has been a slippery slope of sorts when it comes to combat sports.  While it certainly has medical uses and could be beneficial to men whom have lower testosterone as they get older, instances of abuse have always been a point of concern.  The problem arises it when  elite athletes use it to gain what is perceived to be an advantage in the sense that a man in his 40’s can have the testosterone of a man in his last teens or 20’s.  In cases where it is prescribed by a doctor and proper paperwork is filed with the appropriate [...]

UFC 170 Preview

February 22, 2014 // 5 Comments

Tonight the UFC presents UFC 170 and for only the second time in the history of the organization they will have a pay-per-view event headlined by two women fighters.  While the unbeaten record of both champion and challenger is enough to sell the fight on its own, there is actually a pretty interesting spin on this bout.  For the first time in the UFC two individuals who have earned medals in the Olympics will headline a UFC event.  On one side you have the challenger Sara McMann who won the Silver medal in Wrestling at the 2004 Olympics.  Across the cage will be the champion Ronda Rousey [...]

UFC Fight Night 36 Preview

February 15, 2014 // 5 Comments

The UFC returns tonight for UFN 36 from Brazil.  The card is headlined by a five round bout with possible title implications as Lyoto Machida looks to stay unbeaten since dropping down to Middleweight and faces former Gegard Mousasi.  What I find strange about the contest is the fact that it seems that most are making it seems as if it is a forgone conclusion that Machida will win this fight.  While Mousasi isn’t ranked in the UFC as a Middleweight that is only because this is his first bout in the UFC in that division.  As a former veteran of Pride, Dream and Strikforce Mousasi is [...]

Rashad Evans Hurts Knee, Pulls out of UFC 170

February 12, 2014 // 3 Comments

Just ten days before he was scheduled to face off against unbeaten Daniel Cormier at UFC 170, Rashad Evans has sustained a knee injury and has been forced to pull out of the bout.  While UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta did not disclose full details of the injury he did say Rashad is expected to only need four weeks worth of rehab on the knee and they are currently looking at the possibility of re-booking the fight for UFC 172 in Baltimore.  The bout featuring Welterweights Rory MacDonald and Demian Maia has been promoted to Co-Main Event and the card will proceed with 10 bouts rather than 11. UFC [...]

Anderson Silva Back in Gym Following Gruesome Leg Break

February 9, 2014 // 3 Comments

Back at UFC 168 Anderson Silva suffered one of the most gruesome injuries in recent history.  The injury came when Silva threw a leg kick that was checked and made contact with the knee of his opponent Chris Weidman resulting in Anderson breaking his leg.  A lot of fans including myself speculated whether Silva at 38 years of age would be able to make a comeback to the sport at all.  Silva though has been very adamant about his return to the UFC in conversations with Dana White and in a true testament to his will to compete, Silva sent out the following picture: Silva has also apparently [...]

UFC Fighter Thiago Silva Arrested in Florida

February 7, 2014 // 5 Comments

Late Thursday night UFC fighter Thiago Silva was involved in an altercation with multiple people at the Pablo Popovitch Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Center.   The altercation allegedly saw Silva brandish a weapon while threatening patrons of the center before leaving and barricading himself in his own house.  Eventually he turned himself into police.  The UFC released a statement on the events:   “This evening, we were made aware of a situation involving Thiago Silva, we are in the process of gathering the facts and have no further comment at this time.” Since then official charges have [...]
