July 10, 2016 // 0 Comments

Some of you may know that I am slowly working on a book that is yet untitled and so dubbed “Project Legends” for now. This is an excerpt from the project that is still very much in the early goings. The original “Terrible Turk,” Yusuf Ismail hailed from the village of Karalar, located near Shumen, Özü Eyalet, Ottoman Empire, where he was known as Şumnulu Yusuf and first gained prominence as a Turkish oil wrestler. Yusuf was discovered by French wrestler Joseph Doublier, who after being defeated by rival Sabès traveled to Turkey and returned with three wrestlers who he [...]

Where’d The Wrestling Go? Introducing Pro Wrestling Post (

May 12, 2016 // 0 Comments

Last month I published a site address saying there was a renewed focus on pro wrestling here on Vortex Effect, and that going forward the site would be largely wrestling based. That’s not the case anymore. In fact, you may have noticed that there’s now zero wrestling content on the site. Even the “state of the site address” is gone. So what happened? That’s easy to answer; I moved it. I do have a bit of a renewed focus on wrestling. I have two projects in the works, one that I’m actively working on (some of you may know this to be a book I’m writing), [...]

Book Review: The 100 Greatest WWE Matches

May 5, 2016 // 2 Comments

The partnership between WWE and DK Publishing has produced some of the highest quality WWE books ever, and that partnership’s latest release certainly lives up to the high standards that they’ve set. In WWE: The 100 Greatest Matches, best-selling author Dean Miller returns to write in-depth about 100 WWE matches. Each match takes up two pages and details the lead up to the match, the match itself, and the aftermath of the match. All the text is broken up with wonderfully placed, high-quality pictures. In total, the 9.2 x 0.8 x 11.1-inch hardcover book contains 208 pages including [...]

Book Review: 30 Years of WrestleMania

October 6, 2014 // 0 Comments

The WWE partnership with DK Publishing has resulted in some really great historical WWE books. There’s the two encyclopedia’s and the WWE 50 book. Now, there’s 30 Years of WrestleMania, which released on September 15th. Like its predecessors, 30 Years of WrestleMania is a beautiful and wonderfully put together hardcover book. If you have the WWE 50 book, it’s about the same size as that (smaller than the two encyclopedias). Nice glossy pages with gold foil trim makes it look really slick. The book is authored by Brian Shields and Dean Miller, both veteran authors and [...]

Quick Daily Review #8: Superfly The Jimmy Snuka Story [Book]

January 8, 2013 // 3 Comments

Quick Daily Review #8: Superfly The Jimmy Snuka Story [Book] Author: Jimmy Snuka, Jon Chattman Publisher: Triumph Books Hardcover: 213 pages * A copy of this book was provided by the publisher for review. Jimmy Snuka’s prime as a wrestler was a few years before my time; my earliest memories of seeing the Superfly in action was during his early 90s WWF run where he was a solid mid-card act. As I got older and was able to acquire tapes and eventually the Internet, I was able to see some of Snuka’s older stuff from the late 70s to early/mid 80s and was able to appreciate what he meant for [...]
