Quick Daily Review #270: Shocker (1989)

October 31, 2015 // 0 Comments

Shocker (1989) Starring: Mitch Pileggi, Michael Murphy, John Tesh Director: Wes Craven Genre: Horror, Comedy Released: October 27, 1989 MPAA Rating: R This may surprise some people, but Shocker is one of my all time favorite movies from the late great Wes Craven. I first got hooked on it during late night showings on basic cable back when I was growing up. The story is a little bit like Nightmare On Elm Street, in fact you might even call it a rip-off (but if anyone’s allowed to ripoff that movie, who else is it gonna be, right?). That said this movie rocked my socks growing up. Anyway, [...]

Quick Daily Review #269: Dracula Untold (2014)

October 30, 2015 // 0 Comments

Dracula Untold (2014) Starring: Luke Evans, Dominic Cooper, Sarah Gadon Director: Gary Shore Genre: Horror, Drama Released: October 10, 2014 MPAA Rating: PG-13 There may have been a very good reason this Dracula’s story was untold. It’s just a shame it didn’t remain that way. This movie should really have been titled Edward Untold as it is just an obvious attempt to take an established character and turn him into a swooning icon for the twenty-something audience who grew up with the Twilight series, with a slight attempt to also turn into a Dark Knight franchise ripoff as well. Dracula [...]

Quick Daily Review #268: Trick r’ Treat (2007)

October 29, 2015 // 0 Comments

Trick R’ Treat (2007) Starring: Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker Director: Michael Dougherty Genre(s): Horror Released: December 9, 2007 MPAA Rating: R   In Halloween 3, John Carpenter wanted to turn the Halloween franchise into a kind of Twilight Zone series of interconnected but unrelated horror stories that just happened to fall on Halloween. Unfortunately, this was after the Michael Myers character had already taken a deep hold over the series. I think Trick R’ Treat however, is exactly the kind of movie he had hoped for with H3. This movie takes a series of [...]

Quick Daily Review #267: Bone Tomahawk (2015)

October 28, 2015 // 0 Comments

Bone Tomahawk (2015) Director: S. Craig Zahler This is a hell of a year for Kurt Russel fans. Not having done a western of any kind since Tombstone, 2015 will see him star in two oaters, this being the first, and the second one being QT’s upcoming ‘Hateful 8’. Bone Tomahawk (a truly great title) is billed as a genre-crossing horror western, although I would say that’s really only applicable to the final act of the film, which to be fair, cranks up the intensity level to eleven as far as the gore and terror are concerned. My wife is a huge fan of sadistic horror flicks like Saw [...]

Quick Daily Review #266: Beetlejuice (1988)

October 27, 2015 // 0 Comments

Beetlejuice (1988) Starring: Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, Michael Keaton Director: Tim Burton Genre: Comedy Released: March 30, 1988 MPAA Rating: PG   My wife is among the world’s biggest Tim Burton fans, and this of course, is one of her favorite movies. Growing up I recall loving it too. It’s strange looking back now how little actual screen time Michael Keaton gets in the title role here, but it’s telling how much that he manages to do with said screen time. Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin carry the bulk of the movie, playing a newlywed couple that is killed in a freak car caused by [...]

Quick Daily Review #265: Nosferatu (1922)

October 26, 2015 // 0 Comments

Nosferatu (1922) Starring: Max Schreck, Greta Schröder, Ruth Landshoff Director: F.W. Murnau Genre(s): Horror Released: March 4, 1922 MPAA Rating: PG   While far be it from me to condone direct theft/plagiarism, I will say here, that even though this movie was a direct rip-off of Bram Stroker’s Dracula, as a motion picture, it remains superior to any subsequent attempt to film the Dracula story, even to this day. This is another review from the big 50-pack horror movie box set I bought a few weeks back. This was one the wife insisted on, and I could tell from the smile on her face [...]

Quick Daily Review #264: Army of Darkness (1993)

October 25, 2015 // 0 Comments

Army of Darkness (1993) Starring: Bruce Campbell, Embeth Davidtz, Marcus Gilbert Director: Sam Raimi Genre(s): Horror, Comedy Released: December 9, 2007 MPAA Rating: R   At the end of Evil Dead 2 Ash, (who while not killing the undead demonic hordes of the world is a humble retail sales associate at S-Mart) jumped into this time vortex thingy-what-have-you or whatever and it transported him back to medieval times where he must use his cunning badassedry to help save a simple people from the evil that lurks among them. To save them, he must help them procure the ‘Book of the Dead’, [...]

Quick Daily Review #263: Evil Dead 2 (1987)

October 24, 2015 // 0 Comments

Evil Dead 2 (1987) Starring: Bruce Campbell, Sarah Berry, Dan Hicks Director: Sam Raimi Genre(s): Horror, Comedy Released: March 13, 1987 MPAA Rating: R   Still trapped in the same cabin from part one, Ash, the sole survivor from last time out, still finds himself battling the undead. To keep things interesting a few interlopers and visitors pop up here and there, but mostly, this is Ashley’s inner-badass coming out party bay-bay. Evil Dead 2 is the film most people think of when they think of the Evil Dead franchise in all of its gratuitous green-blood-spewing glory. The first film [...]

Quick Daily Review #262: Evil Dead (1981)

October 23, 2015 // 0 Comments

Evil Dead (1981) As we get nearer to Halloween, I was struggling to think of more horror titles to fit in with the QDR series when the ‘Evil Dead’ franchise popped in my head. This works as a double tie-in with the Halloween season, plus the new TV series starting this fall starring none other than Mr. Bruce Campbell in the role that only he can play. My man-crush on Mr. Campbell is both deep and creepy. (Call me!) Anyway, this was the flick that started it all for both Bruce and director Sam Raimi. Five twenty-somethings retreat out into the woods and stay at this old cabin for some [...]

Quick Daily Review #261: The Little Shop of Horrors (1960)

October 22, 2015 // 0 Comments

The Little Shop of Horrors (1960) I’m a sucker for old Roger Corman flicks and other such “D-Movie” shenanigans, but this movie was just a really lazy and rushed affair. I’m not one to normally harp on the superiority of remakes, but the 1986 musical version of this story is superior in just about every way. I found this flick as part of a big collection of horror movies in the five dollar bin at Walmart. It tells the story of poor put-upon Seymour, who works in a flower shop run by a petty cheapskate, and who is in love with his daughter, Audrey. Seymour buys a plant which he names [...]

Quick Daily Review #260: Sideways (2004)

October 21, 2015 // 0 Comments

Sideways (2004) It’s a real treat to stumble across a movie like ‘Sideways’. I’d never heard of this before stumbling across a showing on HBO last night, but considering it had two of my favorite character actors in Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church, I figured it was worth a shot. Giamatti plays one of the best roles of his career here. His character, Miles, is a put-upon middle school English teacher who has been divorced for two years, and is struggling to get over his ex as well as get a novel published. His old college friend, Jack, (an actor best known for his work in the [...]

Quick Daily Review #259: The Final Girls (2015)

October 20, 2015 // 2 Comments

The Final Girls (2015) If I tell you this movie is like Scream filtered through the world of Last Action Hero, I will have given you the premise of this movie, but will have told you nothing about its heart. This movie is a parody of the classic 80s slasher genre, but, as strange as it may sound, a good natured and emotionally poignant one that clearly wears its’ heart on its sleeve. Taissa Farmiga (daughter of the beatiful and talented Vera Farmiga) plays Max, the daughter of Amanda Cartwright (Marin Akerman) a lady who dreamed of becoming Bette Davis but instead whose main claim to faim [...]
